Hello all. I have been recording analog for about almost a year now. I've learned alot thanks to the users on this forums (thanks) So Ive been recording my bands songs for demos on my two teac a3340s. But I have noticed that I NEED more tracks! Now I LOVE LOVE LOVE the quality of my 3340s' but they dont have enough tracks. I need about 12-16 tracks. I can upgrade to an 80-8
but that is still...only 8 tracks ( I need at least 12). I heard about the MSR16 being to thin (not enough space on tape for 16 tracks). My idea is pretty clear... I want to EQ each track on one channel so I can have an amazing EQ on my music. I still have to finish recording the demos but I need to start saving up for the REAL DEAL so I can show the world. :)

I was thinking about using two 8 track recorders... But I would need to sync them together...

Look around for a cheap MSR16, only uses 1/2" tape and they sound pretty good.

Cheers

Alan.

Track the drums first, on 7 tracks. Mix that down to one or two tracks (one if you can get by with mono on drums, which I would think you could. Erase all other tracks. Track the other instruments on 5 or 6 of the remaining 7 tracks. Mix everything down to one or two tracks. Result: 12 to 14 tracks from an 8-track machine.

At least I think that would work.

I had to do this with my 24 track....I think in total we had over a hundred tracks. We'd filled up 22 of em then bounce em down to 2 then fill up 20 bounce em down to 2 etc. This was only because this song was about 10 minutes long and it was like 5 or 6 different parts and the band would change tones for every part.

I think my best bet would be using one 8 track and mixing down to my 3340 for the master tape.

What is your price point? 1/2" 16 track you can find anywhere from US$400-1000 Fostex or Tascam. Tascam MSR-16's usually run in the US$500-800 range, and have better parts availability.

If track width is an issue for you you could go to 1" 16 track, I believe there is a pristine MS16 for sale right now somewhere in Canada...;) Otherwise probably US$1200-1500 ish and up and same for the MSR-24 although I saw one of those for sale at $850 once.

1/2" tape is about twice as much as 1/4" tape, and 1" there again higher.
