I have a feeling that this is going to be long because I'm a very verbose person. I apologize in advance.
This is my first post here. I found it by googling for an audio production forum. I need a community to come to and learn from. It's frustrating doing this on my own. I want to learn as much as I can about mixing, mastering, and so forth; but I just don't have the exact means to get into it. I've been doing this on my own for about seven or eight years years now (I'm 21), but I'm quick to admit that I don't really know much at all. I'm still ignorant about most of the things I'm doing or what to do get achieve the sound I want.
I got into this because I wanted to make the transition from being in marching band, into making popular music. I'm intrigued by every element that goes into making a song to the point that I find myself listening to the mixing and admiring the engineer more than the artist singing or rapping the song.
I've dealt in Hip-Hop for about 90% of my time recording myself and other people because I was comfortable just messing with someone's voice and doing nothing else. I had no idea what I was doing anyway, lol. Now I want to really expand and get into the production of other genres. Before I can go on into that, I still need to know what I'm doing here in Hip-Hop dealing primarily with voices.
I'm just looking for some advice and a bit of mentoring about mixing and mastering. How would I go about achieving a great sounding mix where the vocals are crisp and standout over the track? I know there isn't a set guideline, but there has to be some kind of knowledge that someone can impart on me. I'm ready and willing to learn.
I recently did a song and I've been struggling with the mix for some time. It seems that sometimes my mixes sound okay and others they sound really crappy. Any advice on what to do? You can start at ground zero with me. Even if I already know it, there is no harm in hearing it twice.
Feel free to skip ahead to here:
Here are two recent mixes I've done.
"Bad Broads" - Quik Kash

"No Sleep For The Gifted" - Jay Adams ft. Quik Kash
http://twiturm.com/93202
What can I do with the vocals to make them better? They don't sound as good as what I've heard with the same equipment and set up I have!
I'm using
Thanks and sorry for the length!
