Hey,

I have just uploaded my 1st attempt at a YouTube vid :o :). Really pretty rough I guess - just some footage I took on a couple of family outings the last few weeks. Used WMM which seems simple enough.

The song is the same Flaming Lips cover I posted a week or so ago, so my apologies for hitting you with it again, but a bit different with visual elements...any good? Any advice? How's the audio coming through given the medium?

Thanks!
Pete

Sounds great nice and clear - loud compared to some stuff I've watched on YT. That's not a problem it just woke up my cat lol... Good tune and cool vid. I should try this someday but no idea what images to use...

Thanks for checking it out ido. Good to hear the audio seems ok. It was really messed up sounding when I first played it back...much better now. Sorry about the cat!

I would definitely enjoy watching vids of your tunes. I'm thinking your songs would benefit from a more serious and organized approach to the video than what I've done here, which is kida random :o :).

Never heard the song before, sounds good. The mix came through good on the video, enjoyed listening and watching.

I've got to get a video up some day.

thanks for sharing

Hell yeah dude I liked it. You did a great job on the video with all the sunshots keeping everyone as like a shadow figure and stuff, that was pretty cool. Some great scenic views there too. Where were those scenic views taken at? It looks like an awesome place to visit. We've got some great scenery in Kentucky that you could do some videos about, you should visit sometime.

EDIT: BTW I love that song that you're covering. I've never heard it before but what you've done here sounds awesome.

Peace

Excellent audio quality for utub!
Video is goood - a tad enigmatic in terms of the identies of the bouncers but that's FL too!
Well done!

brilliant, not sure of the video 100% of the time...but damn if you havent given me some ideas!

i love that track even more dude....did this take much effort? id be interested in hearing what you did to bring this together

Yeah nice vid. The silhouettes with the effects works well. You've taken some regular ordinary everyday images and strung them into something watchable. Good job

Good vid and tune to go with it. It definitely sounds and looks better than 99% of the typical youtube crap that's out there.

Looks and Sounds good. Videos are difficult, I like the general style and effects you used. I would use one more group of images, like maybe some video of the guitar being played or something to mix it up - and probably lose the bear and the cops OR use that colorization effect on them to blend them in better. The stuff with the kids dancing is awesome.

Overall its really great audio + video

Hey thanks Chili. I'm glad you liked it...I would definitely be psyched to see a video of yours someday...bring it on :).

Mix is real nice for a youtube video. Good stuff Heat.

Thanks dodge - I'm reassured that the audio seems ok as it can tend to kinda suck on that site...not sure why?

Hey, thanks trump :)! Yes, I was kinda like a one trick pony with the use of the sun on this...I just couldn't get enough of it I guess.

Most of the stuff with my kids and the sun and stuff was shot behind my house at a beach on Sebago Lake in southern Maine a couple of weeks ago. The mountains, waterfalls, bear, etc. were shot this past weekend in the White Mountains of New Hampshire (about an hour West of here). Some of it was from the top of Mt Washington which is pretty massive for the East Coast (6000+ ft.).

Anyway, never been to Kentucky, but have seen some beautiful pictures and would like to see it someday.

Thanks ray...yes, an enigma I suppose. Not very cherent and I struggled with whether to do some kind of narrative or whether to just present abstract images...I wound up doing a little of both with mixed results...cool that it sounds good though!

Hey thanks kc...so, what aren't you sure about? Just trying to fgure what to work on if I do this again...the quality of the images, or the appropriateness of them, or maybe just not sure what you're looking at...just curious :).

This was not difficult per se, but it was time consuming.

From a creative standpoint, I lacked focus. All I knew is that I wanted to have slow motion images of my kids dancing in sillouette with the sun behind them (don't ask me why) - then I thought of the leaf thing and then filmed all that. The rest was just - "oh, that looks cool. I'll film that!"...I figured I'd just build up a library of images and create a story out of it later - not what I'd recommend.

From a technical standpoint, this is low budget. I shot the video with my wife's Canon digital camera. About 35 clips from 10 secs to 2 mins each. They come out as MOV files which appear to be useless, so I had to download conversion software to indiviually change them to AVI files (which is what Windows Movie Maker seemed to prefer). This took hours...and hours...and hours :(

Then, I had to import all the AVI files into WMM, and only then could I actually "make" the video. That part was pretty fun and only took a few hours (some of that was learning how to use it). I should've spent more time at this phase but couldn't find too many cool features with WMM. Just crop, drag and drop into a timeline...maybe add some effects (there's only a few there and I used 'em all a bunch of times :o).

Then I had to save the project as a movie to the hard drive of this 5 year old cheapo Toshiba laptop and that took like a freakin' hour at least - then the YouTube upload and done. Whew! If you have a strong PC and better video editing software, I bet it would go much quicker and be more fun.

Way more than anyone wanted to know probably, but I tend to over-explain - Sorry!

Thanks Bulls! Watchable is good. I'll take it :).

Thanks Greg :). BTW - I really wish I could try mixing your tune, but all I've got is a standalone protastudio with no USB and 24 tracks...:(. Good of you to let everyone work on those tracks though!

Thanks! I agree that it kind of needed something more lively in there to break it up. Shots of me performing/recording, however nauseating, might have done the trick. You're right about the bear and the overturned car thing. I just shot so much crazy shit that day, I think I wanted to pack it all in no matter what. The dancing is mt favorite part too - thanks for the advice :).

Oh when i said not 100% I meant 99% ;)

Just, as mentioned, it would have been nice to see some of you playing or something more with someone playing or singing...the kids dancing was brilliant...really went with the whole vibe

Ive got a little samsung DV recorder but windows move maker is a bit hit or miss on my PC for some reason, I may try and track something else down and give this a shot

I hope you do more of these

Cool, thanks for explaining that. If you can find anything more advanced than WMM that will work on your pc, I'd recommend it. While very easy to use, it doesn't offer many useful features at all imo.

Your music would lend itself to all kinds of different visual possibilities - you must do it.

Not bad, but not that great, either. Enjoyed the music, and the video was tolerable, but only barely. Probably a good thing to show at family reunions and such, but for general consumption, it was a bit too slow, IMO.

Hey, thanks for the honesty P.I. :)

While surprised to hear you found it barely tolerable, I have to agree it isn't great. For my 1st attempt though, with limited resources and zero experience, I was actually encouraged by the results.

I have some more ideas for the future and I think with a better concept and more time spent editing, I should be capable of doing better. I don't think this would fly at a family reunion :p.

Wow, dude... You took that well. I'm not entirely sure what possessed me last night, but I was up listening to crud on here until 3am, and I was in a pretty pissy mood, too. Your video really isn't that bad at all, and it's quite a bit more than barely tolerable. Lots of it is actually pretty creative, and if we're judging by the standards set by youtube, I'd say you're definitely on the upper-end. Keep at it, bro.
