Oh man, the list could go on and on.....

What you want to be looking for is a console that has better than good preamps to begin with, then take a look at all of the bells and whistles that different companies have to offer.

My particular favorite would be a Midas console. A 24 channel Venice series "USED" would be in the ball park for your budget.

You need to give a bit more info, how many channels do you need, analog or digital, etc etc,

Alan.

since your planning on using it for both live and studio I'd go with the StudioLive16/ portable and functionality is great. preamps aren't that bad either.

Now I wasn't all that sure about this unit. My understanding is that it all goes down to 2 channels out not all channels can go to your computer.
Or am I wrong about this?

The studio live does record all channels to the computer and all the channels returned and I think some aux as well, I did not suggest it as I don't know what the price is out your way, more than $2000 in OZ.

oh no it has direct outputs for all 16 channels, 6 aux outs, and 4 sub group outs. It also can be used as an interface via firewire not a bad unit at all. I don't personally have one myself, but am tempted to purchase one everytime I go to my buddies setup. you can even expand it and have a 32/8 by interlinking two together. The more I think of it the more I think I want one myself. And no do not have any connection to the company at all.

But still he has to have a console that is proven road worthy.

Just seems to me that you have to set up and tear down your recording set up every time you play out, wouldn't it make sense to have two consoles one for live and one for your recording set up?

I completely agree on that one, bc I would hate to tear down and reset up everytime.

^^^
Im with you guys. Two mixers are always better than one.
I have one for the studio and one for live, too, but I'm starting to thing about changing out my live mixer and adding a small PT rig so I can multi-track shows.

But of course!...................Twice the fun.

Should be able to find two consoles *used* with in the budget and........They lived happily ever after.
I like happy endings!

2 mixers would be a great way to go, if that's what you're up for! About how many tracks would you need for your studio? For live shows? Answer that and we may be able to throw out a few suggestions to help you out some more! :)

My StudioLive has been really good so far. With the capture software that's included I record 16 tracks of wav files.

It's been a good piece of gear so far.

As far as roadworthiness goes, I pamper mine a bit.....it rides in the van instead of the trailer.

I've had it since Oct 09 and average 2-3 gigs per week and haven't had any issues with the mixer yet.

i have been looking at the 16.4.2 for a while now and i like the features and everything but i may need more than 16 channels. the 24.4.2 would be ideal but im sure there would be a better mixer for me for the $3,300.00 price tag it has. now 2 mixers would be ideal for sure but it would shatter the credit card lol. ive also been looking at the yamaha mg series but i dont think i would like the 14 bus. or whatever it is. analog or digital, doesnt really matter to me. and i would baby the mixer and would ride front seat in my truck ;)

Don't forget that the live 24 is more than just a mixer, it is a multichannel interface, has onboard effects, eq, compressors, etc etc, and has automation.

If I was going to setup today I would buy one in a flash. I have been thinking about getting one for a mobile recording set up but the work at the moment does not justify getting another mixer.

Cheers
Alan.
