saw Gil Scot Heron back in Edinburgh in the 90s, amazing gig...i think i saw Gangstar with Courtney Pine the week before in the same venue...shit i saw some good gigs back then :o

I saw him at the Commonwealth Institute (High Street Ken) in '83 - one of the best gigs I've ever seen. There were no seats, I was hanging off a post and grooving like I had fleas. He had a large band, guitars, super duper poppin', slappin' bass, honking raucous horns and intelligent chess player flute, ponkin' percussionists, slamming el funko drummer.....the works. They were called the Amnesia express. He didn't give anyone the opportunity to just sit and listen. It was groove or grieve !
I saw him the next year at what was then called the Brixton Academy. It was much scaled down, just him on electric piano with bass and drums. The piano was so loud and distorted and I was kind of disappointed having been enthralled the year before. John Cooper Clark read his poetry and I couldn't wait for him to get off. Luckilly my cousin lived in Brixton so I didn't have to walk 8 miles home as was my wont in those highly, stoned, days.....

Sorry for the off topic reminisce ! For what it's worth, I always liked the sound of Heron's stuff. Sophisticatedly raw.
 
I am still amazed how many of you guys are still firmly planted in the 20th century :D

One would think there have been no great CDs or music created in the 21st century.

Fiona Apple had an album come out in 2005, it was wayyy more than solid.
As was Toxicity.
And how did I forget to mention Black Gives Way to Blue ?!

You just edited. Yeah Toxicity is a solid album. So was "Steal this Album" Although Mezmerize got on my nerves. Looks like someone who had no business making decisions made decisions on production and mastering. It is harsh, pumps all over the place in a bad way... then they got that stupid "hollywood" track with that stupid vocoder nonsense... it's just irritating. Blah.

agreed...and for the record the CD i mentioned was 2009 :D
 
Flaw "Through the Eyes". One of the more musical new(ish) heavy metal bands IMO. The guy knows how to sing for sure.

Yeah I didnt see the need to post again when i could just edit :p

Mezmerize just didn't do anything for me either. BYOB became irritating pretty quickly.
 
I heard a song called Hallelujah Goat by the band Volbeat, they're newish I believe, it was really good stuff, I might have to go sample some of their stuff on Amazon.

Well, yeah. Most of my developmental and formative musical moves were in the 20th century. After all, it was a long century. In a way, most of what I want to hear was done then. I do like stuff from other centuries, both before and after, but they are definitely in the minority.

But I find myself in a similar state to you guys, insofar as I don't really buy new stuff. I've had about 8 major record buying periods in my life, the last of which spanned 2006-2008. Truth be told, I just have too much music to be thinking about new stuff. The 300 albums I acquired in those two years alone will take me ten years to properly assimilate ! I do listen to the music that members of HR post. Some of it is fantastic, some of it is OK.

I guess I do listen to some pop stuff coz I've got two young kids and neices and nephews. But not by choice {listening to the music that is, not the family !}! Being an albums man and driving for a living, I get more time to listen to my albums on the road than I did as a teenager with little to do so I rarely listen to them at home.

Dirt Farmer by Levon Helm is fantastic sounding. Also It's About Time by Marc Ford. Black Crowes fans were expecting a show off guitar record but it's just full of great songs and a nice warm sound. These are two of my favorites of all time.

This is one of my favorite contemporary mixes, too. Spectacular sounding album - Steven Wilson is a genius.

I'll also toss Devin Townsend's "Terria" out there - if you start dissecting it, everything sounds like crap. Very thin, clicky kit, kind of distant-yet-'pointy' drum sound across the board, in fact, and the (metal) guitars were cut with a stock SSS strat, for christ's sake. Yet, the sum of all these not-very-inspiring-sounding parts makes for one of the most massive sounding albums I've ever heard. It's a thing of beauty.

Also, for totally different reasons, Tom Waits' "Mule Variations." :D

Yeah, I understand the "comfort zone" thing... plus you've already spent the time to weed out the good stuff from the era you're most comfortable with... it's a chore to weed out the new good stuff, but it's worth it. I just spent $150 on CDs the other day from Ameoba Music. 2/3 of it is going back to the store for store credit. Sure, I'll lose some money, but hey, it's a risk I am willing to take to try out some unknowns. :)
 
Oh, and Fantastic Planet by Failure. That record is ridiculously amazing.

I agree with all of this. Although I do really like 'The Cocaine Makes Me Feel Like I'm On This Song', and 'Sad Statue'..

It's not surprising that Toxicity and Steal This Album are equally solid. Steal This Album was made up of songs written and recorded for Toxicity that didn't fit with the overall tone of the album.
