Hey,

I just finished this. I've posted it a couple of times during it's evolution, from instrumental to different vocal ideas. I think I'm done with tweaking it, performance-wise. But I can use help with the mix, etc....

Like all my tunes, I did everything. Here's my set-up.

2X AKG C100s ....DRUM OVERHEADS
1X SHURE SM57.....SNARE
1X AKG D112....KIK

Ibanez bass direct in

Fender Strat into Peavey Studio Pro Mic'ed with an SM57

AKG C3000....Vocals

All recorded into my TASCAM 2488, and then the files are transferred into REAPER for mixing.

I think that's it.

As always, all suggestions are appreciated and usually at least tried.

Thanx

Typing as I listen:
Awesome drum sound as always. Vocals sound great. I liked that flangey sounding vocal. The guitar panned right sounds to grainy for me. It's like, cheap and fuzzy. The other guitar tones are fine. I think they are a bit quiet overall though. Bring them up a notch and see how that sounds. The bass is cool with the song. How did you process it? Neat song itself. Good job :D

Hey Squib. Thanx a lot. I just did a re-mix and brough the guitars up a bit. I also tried to thicken up the grainy guit on the right. Thanx a lot.

To answer your question, I just put a little compression on the bass and EQ'd out a little "honk" in the 300hz range. :)
This was really good.
Thank you. I appreciate that.

Sounds awsome Rami, I dont have much to add.
very tight playing, vocals sounds great.

I like this a lot... though I tend to prefer a little brightness on the bass, not sure if that fits your song/genre, but I would at least try it.

Very, very tight and polished. I like the balance very much. Kudos.

Man alive... Those fills are amazing.... The accented snare / tom hits while rolling that fast is something I hope to learn one day.

I listened to these in my studio, through my Rokit 8's.

Very, very, very, very tight playing, and you've got some serious separation in your drum tracks. Honestly (and I think I've made this mistake before), if I didn't know you were playing the drums, I'd call using a drum machine on ya. You're rhythm is as close to perfect as my ears can discern. To me, it's spot-on beat perfect, and the sounds from your drums sound so separated (e.g. hi-hat coming hard right, with virtually no bleed in left, same with toms), it almost sounds .... sanitized.

I don't know... The sounds from each of your drums are awesome, but the whole kit, to me (and it's always been this way, to some degree or another), *as a kit*, sounds a bit too sanitized, almost like each drum has been played in its own room.... This is just a personal thing, too. I mean.. Listen to my drum tracks. They're much, much dirtier than yours, and the bleed is pretty crazy. Maybe I've just got accustomed to hearing recordings that way. I don't know. I'd prefer mine a bit cleaner, and I'd prefer yours a bit dirtier. I hope that makes sense... Take with the usual grain of salt.

Is your room super treated? I don't think I've asked you what your drum recording set up is (as far as the room goes)... It sounds like your room may be very treated.

Anyway... I'm babbling. Your beats / fills are amazing. Your drum sounds very clean, and the rest is pretty much perfectly balanced. Loved the ending "head". Added a bit of humor to the song.

Very good recording, RAMI. Thanks for sharing.

Great. Thanx, Nak!.
Much much much much better!
Awesome!!! Couldn't have done it without you.

Thank you very much, Frederic. I'll play with the bass sound a bit, though I don't know how much I can change it without re-tracking. I don't disagree with you, now that you mention it. A brighter bass, especially in the drum break, would probably work well. Thanx for the listen and comments.

Hey Poetic,

I really appreciate that. I don't know what to say about my drum mix. It's a pretty basic set up, with the 4 mics I mentioned, set up in a cross between Recorderman and Glyn Johns. I do have a few bass traps, and a cloud over the drums, but that's about it. My 4-car garage is my studio, so I have cement floors and 7' ceilings. My drum tracks actually do have the normal amount of leakage and I don't gate anything, so I'm surprised to hear you say that they sound THAT seperated. But, I guess that can't be too bad a thing.

Thanx a lot for the help so far, everyone.

I think this'd be a fun riff to play. Did you enjoy it?
The gang vocals sound cool.
I wouldn't add anymore top end on the bass than there is at present there's enough going on in that range anyway.
I really like the 1st 1/2 doz notes of the solo - they GRAB. the rest of the solo is great but those 1st few ...
Excellent progress made on this mix - it does rather help to have such well played & tracked stuff to work with.
You've learnt Reaper very well & very quickly.

With a crap ton of reverb, this could easily be an 80's hit! :laughings::laughings::laughings:

Guits up a tad? In the phones, it sounds boss; on the monitors, the guits sound thin.....split the line?

The bottom end sounds a bit weak. It sounded better to be with a +db smiley 500-down.

The tune fits your voice. Nice job. Tight.

Yeah the bass on this one sounds much better than the previous one I heard from you. Drums are fantastic, both sound and playing.
I have to mention the sound of the guitars. Mind you, I compare this to stuff like QOTSA which I think is apt, but you might completely disagree. They're too thin to my taste. This song's a galloper, you know, hop skip bounce bounce slam whack. The guitars don't have that feel, they sound slightly synthetic to me which I'm sure they're not. It works really well in the solo parts where the notes are generally higher. Impressive material though.

I liked the drum sound. Love the guitar sound too. Maybe bump up the guitar levels just a nudge?

OK maybe a little more crack from the snare might be cool? Might be worth a try and see what it sounds like.

Lead vocal is a bit dry. It should be dry, but maybe wet it down just a smidge from where it is. Liked the way the backing vox sounded.

Liked the flanger on the drums during the middle break.

Bass is sitting perfect.

It's another great tune and I'm thinking the mix is good. Any chnages would be a matter of personal taste and yours is great!

Ray, Squibble, Jeff, Singlespeak, TripleM, and Ido.

Hey guys, I fell behind answering, and I hate doing that because I like to answer each post seperately. I really appreciate all the comments and suggestions. I think I pretty much tried everything everyone suggested (bringing up the guitars, etc...brightening the bass). Some of it, I kept, and some didn't work for this tune. But I really appreciate the help from each of you.

It's been re-mixed a few times since the frist post, so thanx again.

You're welcome. If you really want to thank me, listen to a song my sister and I wrote, "Deep". :laughings:

The one thing that always stands out with all your songs is how tight all the parts fit together. Not just performance, but arrangement. A lot of fun to hear all the different parts fit together.

I'm sure it's only a difference between your room and mine, but if I push 4khz up just a little, everything jumps right out, especially the crack of the snare.

No real nitpicks. Great job yet again!!!

this is solid...i dont think i have another adjective to suit...just a very very solid recording/mix....

it also makes me wish that drums had perhaps been my first instrument...i doubt ill ever get around to learning them and as a fairly new recorder they are the instrument thats beginning to interest me most

great stuff Rami...really good

Sounds like a recording with restraint...not just 11 across every track. Successful Rami...old school kind of rock
