Loud Sun Studios
Why is it that every time I see sports casters... they are using a side address large diaphragm condenser microphone with a windscreen (inside the studio no doubt), but the worst thing is they talk straight into the end as if it was a Shure SM58..??
Isn't there an audio engineer or someone in the Television studio that is aware that this is wrong? That these are SIDE ADDRESS microphones. Or do they do this for an effect or looks?
I've even seen NASA press releases with top scientist doing the same thing ....HEY this is not rocket surgery here ......Maybe we've all been doing it wrong in the recording studios for all these years.:laughings: Please advise~Huston we have a problem here~

I've never seen it but I had the misfortune of watching my kid's drama teacher hold the SM58 snugly against his chin while he spoke.
I have no idea what he was trying to accomplish but it sounded awful.
As far as the windscreens go.... they soak up a lot of spit. That's important when you consider that the mic is in an upright position.

Yup mattr, but it wasn't any of those broadcast microphones. I know those microphones. these looked like, but can't swear to it, the AKG perception LDC line and the ones from the NASA clips were ksm27 or from that line.

Could be that the mics are in omni pattern?

Alan.

Hey Alan..... I thought about that as well but why would they be right up on the microphone? I mean mouth/lips touching the wind screen.
And there was a good amount of noticeable proximity effect for when they weren't on the microphone it was noticeably weaker. In Omni you would have no proximity effect at all.

Maybe what they're saying is so reprehensible that even the mic has to face away.

I suppose I was trying to think of a reason, omni would have a very natural sounding voice reproduction and if it's in a booth for TV / Radio and no PA system was involved, feedback is no problem.

More likely now i think about it that the mic is not a side address but just looks like it.

Cheers
Alan
