Live with a ribbon? interesting! I shall try it. Must figure out how to set up 8 channels in reaper as I'm jonesing after a mic udner the snare and another sennheiser on the floor tom.

I don't know about live with an actual ribbon, but modern ribbons are tough enough for toms, and figure-8's get used between rack toms all the time, so sure, why not? I've had my drums mic'd with figure-8's on the toms in live situations. Works fine.
You can set up as manny channels as you want in Reaper. Just set up 8 empty tracks and direct each track where to look for it's input by right-clicking in the "meter" area and assign an input.

This matter was brought up a few weeks ago in the microphone form and the only thing that was of concern was the fact that you not only pick up the toms but, you will have bleed from drum set left and right in that ribbon microphone apposed to close micing each drum for as much separation as possible.
So if your doing overheads as well there may be some phasing issues.

I don't have a ribbon mic. I used to mic both mounted toms with one dynamic. But now that I switched to one mic on each tom, it's way the hell better. You get much better tone on the recording if you can point the mic at the drum head properly. You can't quite do that with one mic.

I'm confused. I thought Telepaul asked the question in the OP. That said, I agree with you, IBB, one mic on each tom is far far better, at least, that's what I've found.

Heck just one Ribbon microphone about 3' in front of the drums about 18" above the floor and be done with it....Isn't that how they use to do it?

OK Greg ............that sucks.
But you can certainly hear the difference with bands that went through that change in the studio back before the day....like Ringos drums.... from early recordings up to the break up of the Beatles. Somewhere in there you can hear the dif.
