how do i remove tonecontrol from F hole?

Hey all,

I normally post in the analog forum for recording...i scored an Epiphone Wildkat yesterday which was cool as I have been trying to find one for a while..rockabilly guitars arent real popular in the rock and roll capital..especially for this jazz drummer...anyway there is a short in the tone control...I know its not the control itself(i hope) as it is intermittent if I reach in to the f hole and jiggle the wire...

does anyone know the best way I can get to it? I guess I have to pop the knob and get to it from the f hole as there is no back panel like a solid body...im having a littl buyers remorse and if i can fix it myself will feel better...its a killer axe, good neck, Bigsby tailpiece which looks like a 53 rambler grill...wow, built tough and works great..

but man I got to have a tone control working or it aint much of an axe...any "how to" instruction would be great..

With a lot of patience!

Remove the knob and nut...push it down into the body cavity...use long tongs (like the surgical type) or some long needle-nose pliers to pull the harness/pot out the F-Hole.

There is usually enough wire to do that...though very often you have to remove ALL the knobs and push them into the body, as the wiring harness is tied together as one piece.

Putting it back, just slowly work it all into the cavity, use a long piece of *anything* to help push everything in place *gently*. Sometimes turning the guitar upside-down helps getting the pot stems back through the holes.

It can be done...it just takes more time than back-loaded guitars. The trick is not to break anything else while fixing the one issue!

Attach a piece of string to the old pot before you remove it through one of the F holes, long enough so that the end of it hangs out of the hole that the pot mounts in one you've got the wiring harness out. Attach the string to the new pot once you've got it soldered in, and pull the string back through to get the new pot to the right hole.

Thanks for the advice folks...I dig the string idea as well....going to hit this project right away, except for the soldering part which I will have my real guitarist tech do for me...My soldering is downright dangerous...always ends up looking like some kind of sculpture...just never do any soldering so I dont have the touch whatsoever...plus my buddy loves the smell of burning solder..

Before you do anything get some electrical switch cleaner and try that on the tone pot.

If you are getting the tech to do work on it down the road just get him to do it for you anyway. The time and effort on those things is in getting the wiring loom out and then back in.
