Just Killing Time
The Field - First Mix

As stated, this is a work in progress. I'd appreciate any comments/tips on the mix and production (textural additions/structure ideas).

Cheers guys and gals.

Edit: Just slapped some headphones on and noticed the drum room mics are quite lobsided to the right

Too long and/or repetitive. Drums sound great, although it needs more snare. The snare is getting lost most of the time. Bass is awesome. Nice guitar playing.

Cheers Greg. Yeah they're awesome musicians alright. I thought it was very repetitive too. They don't seem too keen on cutting it down, but I'm going to do some re-arrangement and present it to them as an "alternative (radio) version" and hope they prefer it :)

Sounds nice. I went straight to the new mix and missed the 1st one.

Vocal level seems about right. Bass sounds really great. They remind me of Galactic a little bit. I liked the jam towards the end and could have done with more of that and less singing personally. Nice work.

Good work Philbagg. Listened to the first mix. Hot band. Very tight. I like the room sound - gives the track a live feel. Good balance overall. The guitar on the right sounds fantastic. The left guitar and main vocal are a little harsh at times. More the vocal that the guitar. I didn't think it was too long. There's a lot of variety in the arrangement.

Cheers man! Comments much appreciated :)

I went out to visit the guys a few times before the studio dates (pre production n all that ;) ), and I think Galactic was the name that kept coming up from them when I asked about influences. Guess they did their homework :)

Cheers XLR! I was going after that live feel. After seeing them live, the energy that comes out of them is very hard to match in the studio. So that's kind of what I'm hoping to accomplish.

I'll keep in mind what you said about the harshness of the guitars and vocals.

Wow....Doobie Brothers from Ireland!:D
Real hot band band, Phill, totally great musicians.
Recording sounds great to me, drums could come forward a bit more maybe. Guitar bass and vocals sound tops.

Joey :)

^This pretty much nails what I was thinking about the main vocal. The band is tight. Take me back to the 70's why don't ya.

What mic did you record the main vocal with? I'm thinking it may not be right for this guys voice.

It was either a U87 or an SM7... I think?

I thought his voice sounds great. Maybe I added some harsh EQ. I'm not hearing any problems myself though

Wow! Great band, great song! And you did it justice with this mix. This sounds so sweet. I think KC is being rough--I'm going with at least 4.5 Hitlers plus one Stalin. :D
