Hi good people,

I'm wading into the world of home recording and haven't one iota of knowledge regarding what to use. I picked up some stuff really cheap and am wondering if it's junk or could be useful in the kind of home stuff I want to do. I'm hoping some kind souls here will guide me in the right direction. :)

I plan to do mostly light/acoustic stuff. The missus is an excellent singer and I like acoustic jazz stuff ala bossa, etc. I play guitar, bass, and some horns and will have to use a drum machine for percussion. I'll probably want to add some nice string sounds and piano (we have an acoustic piano) along the way.

I don't have much equip yet but am thinking of going the way of a stand alone digital recorder instead getting involved with too much CPU stuff.

I did purchase a Fostex d-90 but am wondering if it's too obsolete or can still be of some use?

I also have a cheap USB mic and sonar le and have toyed with Audacity, etc. a bit as well. I don't want to have to get a PhD in order to use the sonar software but will learn it if need be, I just basically want to do some good accurate recording of us and maybe a few friends and get a quality result.

Should I ditch the D-90?

Any advice appreciated!

Dutch

(BTW I did go to tweakhead's site and read up on some things there....looks very good info-wise so far)

Welcome aboard!
Hey, I had a quick look at your unit.
Very nice.

So you could get yourself a Behringer ADA8000 and immediately have 8 more tracks.

And everything is rack mountable so, up on the desk or roll it around. Sweet!
Given that many on this site are still in love with the Tascam Portastudio, I doubt that you'll hear too many negative comments. May in fact be too modern for some.
Have some fun with it, then if it's not working for you, try something else.
I will caution you on this though. If you go out and buy a modern standalone, you'll never be happy with your old Fostex.
That's why I suggest working with it first.

Hi Jim,

Thanks for the welcome and advice.

I failed to mention I have an old Behringer mixer. An 802 I believe...it's small and I may have to get another like the one you linked.

I believe what you say about the modern unit. I saw an ad for a Zoom unit that seems to do everything except play your guitar. :) Looks nice to say the least. I think I'll follow your advice and play with the Fostex before I get rid of it.

Thanks again!
Dutch
