Hi, I'm a musician that's venturing into the world of recording. I'm looking for a vocal mic that also would sound great recording acoustic guitar. My voice is really strong but gets a little thin when I go into my upper range.
I was looking at a studio projects B1... but I'm not sure.

I need help!

thanks

I think that if I had to pick one singular mic that was good in general for both acoustic guitar and vocal I would get a used CAD E-100.

I actually prefer the neutral flavor it has on Acoustic Guitar and is my "go to" mic for it anyway. It does not have a hyped upper end so it works well on vocals even if they are a little thin in the upper ranges.

On the other hand, since it is a mid-sized diaphram it does not exhibit the low end proximity boost you may want from a large diaphram mic.

Another mic that is good but more vocal oriented than Guitar oriented (it may be a little bright or boomy depending on placement) is a MXL V67.

I have a Studio Projects B3 (multi patterned version of B1) and I like it a lot as well.
It has a very hot output and is very clean sounding and not as bright as the "C Series" mics. If your acoustic guitar has a harder edged sound to it you may not like the sound you get from the B1, but if it is a mellower sounding guitar, the B1 may compliment it.

You know, as inexpensive as the Naiant mics are for recording acoustics, there is no reason to not have one mic tailored for each purpose.

my experiences naturally...

You can get a used Oktava MK319 for $89-120 - they are great for vocals and guitar.

Here's a very popular thread on this topic. (280 posts / 26,000 page views)

But in a nutshell...

My recommendations for "Best Value" mics

  • The Nady SCM-800 and MCA SP1 side address SDC mics (not LDC!) are $50
  • the cardioid-only, transformer-coupled MXL v67g LDC is $90
  • the three-pattern FET / transformer-coupled CAD GXL3000 is $90from Front End Audio
  • the 9-pattern tube / transformer-coupled Apex 460 is $189.
  • the Nady CM-90 SDC (uses the same capsule as the SCM-800 and SP1) is the lowest priced, true-condenser pencil SDC at $50.
  • For ribbon mics, the Nady RSM-4 and RSM-5 still hold down the low end at $80 with their "short ribbon / long path" motors.
  • the $99 Apex 205 mic is still the "long ribbon / short path" mic to beat.
  • Recently I've really been suggesting the $229 (from Adorama Camera) Nady 1050 as a different color alternative to the Apex 460.
Amongst hundreds of low cost mics, these define "best value" in my book.

GLS Es-58 GLS ES-57 they are sure clones that sound as good if not better.

I'm going to pretend I'm darrin and recommend a used AT3035 . . .

thanks for all the replies.

I know this question is asked a ton on here but i'm new lol

I looked at an AT2035 and a ksm27 by shure.

Does anyone have any experiences with these?

thanks again!

The KSM27 is continued but I have two of them one is very good and the other one has a grounding problem that I can't seem to track down.

Vocals and acoustic guitar are typically recorded with very different kinds of mics, but you could probably get away with using something like an AT2020 for both. I've used them for vocal work on occasion, and they're not bad, but they're better at acoustic guitar....
