Don't stare at the eye.
Oh and by the way, I favor:

Intro
verse
prechorus
verse
chorus
verse
bridge
chorus
outro.

All sprinkled generously with guitar solos.

Aw c'mon...this forum was empty--I'm talking tumbleweeds--when I posted my thread. What's goin' on?

sorry I had to move some obvious threads in here, doing cleanup...

But you are still first! I vouch for that!

Anyway back to business so- your song structure is very 80's :D , and this is not bad, it's a good structure for a pop song.

I think a song needs to have an obvious structure, and to write a good pop/rock song is hard.

I like:
Intro
Verse
Verse
Chorus
Verse
Chorus
Bridge
Chorus

I don't like outros but that's just me. It needs to be done really well to avoid obvious cheese...And all of this under 3:45 :D

I like both those structures and others too, depending on the song.
Never managed to write one under 4.30 though......:o

My song-structure orientations:

intro - opening that big wide door
verses - laying the house foundations
bridges - laying the carpet for...
...choruses - the sun finally comes out!
solos - salt and pepper....sometimes sugar
variations - breaking away for a while keeping one eye on the house
outros - ending the show with a fireworks display

Most times it works......:D

Interesting observation there about the 80's. I've never thought of that structure as such, but I'm definitely a child of the 80's--especially in my musical tastes--so it makes sense. I just hadn't noticed it.

Thank goodness - the songwriting forum is BACK, baby!

Disagree on fade-outs. They have their place, just as much as a hard ending or a train wreck ending. I don't like it when a band is playing live, and tries to do a hard ending on a song that had a fade on the original recording - it seldom works, IMHO, and to me THAT sounds cheesy. :)

I dunno....fade outs never did it for me- it's too un-natural. When playing live you cannot fade out (except with the help of the sound men/tech)...for me this is the test: if a song ending cannot be recreated on stage...

I can't recall a song that had a good fade out ending... but I am sure there are some.

Hey Jude......:D

My typical set up:

Intro
Verse
Verse
Chorus
Solo
Chorus
Verse
Outro

Strawberry Fields Forever?
Oh, and Helter Skelter has both a great fade out AND a great ending.... " I Got Blisters On My Fingers!", Thunk!
