Good Voice. Bad Sound

Hey guys i have a lill question here..
Im sure i have a good voice..
I have a bunch of songs and i want to start
recording them...

My Recorder *Boss BR 600*..
My Mic.. Some Cheap 20$ Walmart mic..
Haha yea eh..
But when i record and playback..
my voice sounds like crap...

The question is, do you think the cheap mic makes that cheap sound??...
Or is it just me.. lol.. Im sure i sound better then my recordings...

Im looking into buying a rode NT1000...
I dont want to spend the cheese if it doesnt improve the sound..

Is this the first time you've heard your recorded voice? Or have you heard it before and liked it? I ask this, because most folks can't stand the sound of their own voice when they're hearing outside of their own head at first. And the ones who are really good even take some time to get used to it.

Certainly a great mic will do better than a $20 cheapie. But a $20 mic can't kill a great voice. It will still sound like a great voice--just one recorded on a $20 mic. And other things, like mic technique and the room, come into play as well.

You say that you're sure you have a good voice. I wonder what makes you sure of that? Before dumping a bunch of money in a mic and all the other gear that follows, maybe it would be wise to confirm your opinion of your voice from some objective 3rd parties?

I got roomates who over hear me somtimes...
Keep telling me i should go audition for events...
There actually the reason why im trying this out....

I was a youth group band leader when i was younger..
8 years younger about... Guitar/Vocals

But ive never been recorded...
Ya till today, and i diddnt like it...

Ill practice the recording a few more times
put it on the internet and see what kind of responces i get..

I noticed my lips are right up aganst the mic while im singing..
Somthing i thought was what i was supposed to do up until
i started reading Microphone Techniques... 2 mins ago...
I have a deeper voice now ofcourse heh..
Ill read up on proper techniques...

Like Strat said, most everyone hates their own voice. A $20 Walmart mic won't eliminate that feeliing.

Mic technique varies for different types of mics. Some you'll be on top of, others you have to back away from.

Forget the Walmart Karaoke mic. Try singing into the built-in mics in the BR 600 recorder. Back off about 12 inches from it when you do this. Make sure the recording level is not too high.
Forget friends' advice - ask a stranger! I've heard people do karaoke based on their friends' input and these people could not hold a note.

Yeah this would give you an alternate view' against the sound of a mic up close' -particularly your average (or worse ) mic, and as it's a bit tougher to get a good vocal eating the mic', given some exceptions where the style' fits, and mic and singing technique are right.
