There are PCMCIA and ExpressCard adapters that provide FireWire (1394) that fit into a PC or Mac laptop, and yes they're easy. There are also PCI adapters that plug into the motherboard. How easy they are depends on your technical aptitude.

Note that FireWire can be extremely problematic depending on the chipset used. Texas Instruments (T.I.) is best.

i'm a total noob with this whole firewire adapter stuff so what slot does it go into on my laptop.

Read post #2... PCMCIA or Expresscard.

Both Belkin and SIIG make PCMCIA and Expresscard firewire adapters with TI chipsets for reasonable prices. DONT buy anything that doesn't have TI chips in it.....

Then you should be able to look in the manual or the manufacturers specs to see what you have.....

right i have a type II pc card slot so i take it i can just get a soundcard with firewire slot...then i can use any firewire mixer or interface. correct?

No guarantees especially with a laptop. even if you buy a Texas Intruments Chipset card from Siig, if the Cardbus on the laptop is not well executed and/or is sharing IRQs with other things it can still give you all kinds of problems.

It's really a try and see kind of deal. If you are buying new stuff to try this make sure the place you buy from has a good return policy.

lol i just wanna get a presonus fp10 now and be able to plug it in with firewire but it seems to be getting more and more confusing with these PCII cards. hey ho.
