I have $1500 to spend at Dell.... I have a very stable and nice desktop system in my home studio. About to travel as much a 4 months a year for the next three years.
will be a locations where I can set up and record but will need to take a laptop

Have $1500 credit at Dell to spend. on it.

Any recommendations? Help appreciated...

(I have a line 6 UX1 to use as a usb interface, but could spring for another interface... don't need many I/O's .)

Anything with at least a dual core processor....2.0 ghz at least. At least 2gb of memory/ram. and good dedicated hard drive...

Never owned a dell but Ive got a toshiba that I use for on the road shows...3yrs and its pushing like it did the 1st day. But just follow my advice n u'll be set homie:cool:

Thanks for advice.... however current models and processors are a little confusing..
In the $1000 to 1500 range lots of different options.

Can get quad i7 processor with 4g ram... but confused as to performance for recording ...

for instance can get a core 2 duo 2.2ghz processor and 4g ramfor around $1150 or so...
But for $100 more or so can get quad core i7 same ram... both have 7200rpm hard drives but the i7 is 1.6ghz... which would be the better route for recording?

Have you looked into the macbook pros
Once you go mac youll never go back...

make sure the processor is an Intel. Id go for the one 2.2ghz...but thats still too much in my opinion. Acouple days ago at my local OFFICE DEPOT, I seen an HP with 2.4ghz with 4gbs of ram and a 250 hard all for $800.

Yep I've seen those prices. Tt's 300 buck more... but Dell offers one with an i7 processor...4gigs ram ... and a 7200 speed hard drive.

I have a quad core. (not i7) on my home desktop system.. when i went to that over the dual core.. the difference was big! with what I do I cannot bog it down.

Just curios about the i7 processor... I know the faster hard drive makes a difference ..

anyone?

There is a difference between a hard drive and a processor. The hard drive is basically the storage unit that holds all your files and software, etc.

The processor/CPU is sorta like yours computers brain.

The faster in GHZ...the better results...BUT ram also plays a part in it as well.

as far as cores go...well a 2ghz dual core will out push a 1.6 ghz i7 core anytime...why? Simply b/c most programs nowadays havent been made to use all the cores. So it leaves some cores unused.

But anyways...you should call DELL and talk to a service rep or something and explain to them wut u need...make a list of they give u...

come back here and post ur list...

and we'll help you out compare which computer to take

hows that sound?

If Dell sold Macs, then that would be good advice. But since he has $1500 credit at Dell, I don't think it would work out so well. :p

It seems like I've heard good things about Dell's Studio line.

.

AAAA
good point
Curious why people wouldnt like macs. IMO the OS is much more reliable especially when it comes to audio and video editing. Maybe the lack of programs???
IDK

I'm sorry but this statement is just plain wrong. A slower clocked i7 will run circles around a faster clocked C2D/C2 Quad, anytime. The memory architecture around the i7 is far superior to anything on the market right now and if you are using samples a lot, this will make a big difference. It is like comparing a P4 to a C2Q, clock speed is irrelevant. Most (if not all) music programs will use all cores available to them so having the most powerful processor you can get/afford is never a bad idea, why sell yourself short with something already a generation behind?

Hey thanks altitude909!
Thats what I thought! Good advice. The problem with MAC it would require leaning DAW's I just don't want to use. Plugins would be different.
I just want to make music without to many problems

damn straight. macbook pro intel core 2 duo 2.2ghz processor, 4g ram, 160g hard drive. just got it last week and i am LOVIN it! firewire 400 and 800. $1100.

i just got the dell catalog not too long ago. there was some pretty sweet machines in there for under $1500. i'd have no problem spending it for you, just no research to back it up. good luck anyway.

Mac blows almost as badly as Dell. Those two brands should be reserved as a punishment for violent criminals.

Tell me about it. I plugged my iPod into one (worked fine on windows), and it
destroyed the hard drive. 30gb, and I can use 6gb of it.

Apple iPod + apple mac = them expecting about $250 to repair it. HA! 30 quid,
new hard drive from hong kong, some DIY, sorted.

Still, shouldn't have to do it.

Also, I had to reinstall the OS on my mac and wipe the hard drive for the 3rd
time in 6 months because Pro Tools, Reason, and Guitar Rig all kept
crashing. (This is a computer with nothing on it except for those 3
applications. Not even the internet. Stable my ass)

Sorry, rant over :p
