Greg,
OXcellent!
Needs a French Horn solo though.
This song always appealed to my novelty record loving inner child!
Good deep vocals - is that your real voice or is it pitch shifted?
Entwhistle really had an original & influencial bass tone & you have its toppiness nicely covered.
Really good recording, terrific perfomance & solid mix. I didn't notice the organ until the outro - sorry.

Cool, thanks Ray. Yes that is my real voice. No pitch shifting. It's my first, last, and only attempt at cookie-monster death metal growl vocals. :D

And yes, Entwistle was awesome. RIP. :(

The organ isn't really meant to be heard. It's only used during the "creepy, crawly" breakdowns as a thickener. I also used it at the crescendo and just let it ring out.

This sh!t is trippy man. Cool sound. Never heard this song before, but it sounds great to me. Love the outro. You dont hear that too much around here, an ending like that.

EXCELLENT!!!!! cover tune!!!!!

That was a KILLER COVER brother!!!...
I'm definitely diggin' it!..
I can remember buggin' my father to play "the spider song" when i was younger,...and i would run around the house singin'..."BORIS THE SPIDER"..
now, i'm 36 years old,..and i must say,..that was one of the BEST cover tunes i've ever heard!...and i'm not kissin' ass,..it's a fact!
GOOD STUFF!!! ROCK ON, BRO!

Never heard this song before. Very original. Your sounds are so clean, Greg, for crying out loud... You must really love your day job.

Drums are seated back in the mix much more than the other stuff I've heard of yours. That said, I focused a lot more on your guitar / bass sound, and man alive... What guitar / amp / processing are you using to get that incredibly clean distortion going on? Seriously... Sounds amazing.

Also, complete side-note, but since I'm here, I'll say it.. I tried the recorderman technique today, and it brought my snare sound out much more. Thanks for the idea. Not sure how I feel about the new stereo image created by it, but at least it's pointing me in the right direction concerning phasing. Thanks for the idea, dude.

I never heard the original either and this is great!
With the groove that you're playing here, one can hear what a damn good drummer you are besides the fact that you can record drums in a pristine way. The sound of that snare...damn! I really liked the tremolo guitar, is that a plug? Your singing's really good here, too. Totally cool, superior stuff, once again, Greg!

Joey :):):):)

Wow, thanks a lot. It is indeed a cool song. The godfather of death metal. :D

Thanks holmes. Recorderman doesn't give you the widest stereo image, but in reality, a drum kit isn't that wide anyway. I think it gives a decent image, and I can spread it a little wider with the tom close mics.

My guitars...this gets complicated. You ready? I plug my guitar/bass into my Firepod, open up Guitar Rig 4, and let er rip. It's an amp sim, and a damn fine one. I'm primarily a halfassed drummer. I don't have a battery of tube amps and ribbon mics laying around.

I never heard the original either and this is great!

Thanks Joey. I do most of my experimenting on cover songs. I used a different kind of reverb on the kit with this one, and I really like it. It makes the kick and snare seem to have more depth....for this song anyway. It might suck on something else. The main rhythms are an SG. The tremmy part is a clean-ish strat played under the SG with a trem pedal set to the tempo and I let the open chords ring out from under the heavier SG parts.

I've been offline for 8 weeks moving house and setting up a new studio and that was a great little tester on my new control room set up. Very true to the original in a lot of ways and a solid clean mix as mentioned above.

Greg, would I be right in remembering you saying a while back you were using a cheap set of Superlux drum mics? Is it the set with the PRA218A kick mic?

Thanks for listening man.

No, I'm using the Cad Pro 7pc kit.

LOL @ all these n00Bs never hearing the original song before.

I feel old.

Good job, gergles.

Haha, n00bs. This song is far from rare, but it's not really one of The Who's better known songs....even though it stayed in the live show until Entwistle died. You have to know the band beyond the normal "Baba O'Reilly" and "Tommy" stuff. You won't hear this on classic rock radio, but you'll hear "Won't Get Fooled Again" every day.

Thanks Wish.

You make it seem/sound so easy....excellent, everything is so clear and nicely separated.

For a knube, such as myself, would you recommend initially doing covers to facilitate learning the gear and such, rather than getting bogged down with arranging original material while at the same time struggling to learn how to operate and apply what the gear has to offer?

Man, I love this song, and you did an amazing version.

Drums seem a bit buried, but not that much. Great sound though!

I had to listen the original version to know it - sorry, but I´m far from be a fan of this "The Who" band...

Your version is far better, Greg.Pretty good job.

Yes, absolutely. I spent pretty much all of my n00b time doing covers. Covers are great for getting familiar with the recording process.
