Right, so i'm now thinking about the future as i'm going to very quickly outgrow the 8 xlr ins i have at present.

What i'm thinking of doing is getting a firewire expresscard (800 of course) for my laptop and then get a firewire interface to run alongside the usb one i have already.

First question, is it possible to run multiple interfaces? I currently have the Lexicon Ionix u82s, which is usb, and i'd want a different brand firewire interface.

Second question, just upgrading in 8's is a bit silly really. So.... Are there any interfaces which have 16+ xlr inputs on firewire 800?

I havent seen any that actually have 16 preamps, but there are plenty with 8 xlr preamps + an ADAT input. So, you could get like a Motu 8Pre and add say a Presonus D8 (that would limit your sample rate though to 48k). In any case, it'll most likely take 2 units to get what you want.

You can expand with ADAT or some interface manufacturer design their units to daisy-chain on firewire (firewire was DESIGNED to allow this and it has the bandwidth to stream over 100 cd-quality audio streams at the same time).

Motu allows you to daisy-chain up to 3 of their interfaces and run them off of one common ASIO driver, giving you over 60 simultaneous ins/outs.

You can't daisy-chain from different manufacturers, it has to be all on one driver due to ASIO limitations.

I've run an 828mkII for years and plan to expand it with either an 8Pre or Presonus via ADAT; this is a good solid way to go....

+1

I'll add that the Behringer ADA8000 is well suited to add 8 channels via ADAT for any interface for two bills. One of the few solid pieces of kit they make.

So let me get this rihght....

If i get an interface, say for example the motu pre8, very nice piece of kit for the price, i can then, using the adat connection, run a simultaneous motu pre8 with it. That right?

Does that all get streamed through the one firewire cable? Or do both pre8's need a firewire connection?

I think they are saying that you can link another Moto through the firewire but it would be cheaper to use the ADAT on the Moto with a ADA8000 to add another 8 preamp channels , an ADA8000 will only run you about $200 .....

Firewire is more than fast enough ..... Also Take into account that in a Lot of cases you can not use 2 different interfaces at the same time, some interfaces will let you run more than one of the same interface but not 2 different interfaces , so there is a good chance you won"t be able to use the Profire and your present interface at the same time but you could use the Profire with several Devices connected to it .....

If i'm going for the profire setup then i wouldn't use my current one, the profire would replace it.

So, this is possible then

One profire with 4 8xpreamps going into it via adat. So thats 32 channels recording simultaneously at 48khz through one firewire cable? That'll work?

Yes that will work without a problem ....
