Its because we get better microphones in England.. SM58's from america sound rubbish... Well even worse than they usually sound... XM8500's are much better . . . . .(English ones)

I think I understand that rather well. But there are really two different questions (maybe three) being asked in this thread:

Question #2: I have t.bones, I need another similar pair, how about C2s?

Answer: Sure.

Question #3: I don't have any mics, how about C2s?

Answer: Sure.

Question #1: I have t.bones, but I want something different/better, how about C2s?

Answer: Different, maybe; better

Remember that generally I am on the side of NOT spending money.

Question: I want a cheap mic do any sound good?

Answer: They are all good for the price but all have flaws you will need to work around.

Question: Will one C2 be good enough to use on a hi hat in a un treated room?

Answer: Yeah why not they are great for the money and have good feedback on Harmony Central....

Question: Is there another microphone in this price region that will give better results on more difficult sources say acoustic guitar?

Answer: Probably not Beh C2's are rediculously cheap:)....

Question: Whats the closest I can get to a high quality mic around this price range that WOULD work on a variety of sources?

Answer: (This thread you are reading)

T.Bone SC180

Used this on vocal last night and recording came out very good! So it just depends on what source your using it on . . . Shame its not that good on acoustic guitar but then again maybe its just that particular guitar i tried it on...

Not surprising, most people like a little brightness in a vocal mic but not so much on acoustic guitar.

Try turning the mic 45 to 90 degrees (yes, pointed sideways) on acoustic guitar, see if you like that better.

cool thanks I will try...
I did try just about every position imaginable x/y . . etc..
I think maybe it was the room it was very damp, would this effect the high frequencies?

I have a pair of C2's. I've used them to mic acoustic guitar & drum overheads. As drum overheads I find the cymbals to be a little harsh & brittle. However, I can usually get them sounding good with a little EQ to tame the highs. I would definitley recommend them for the price. I mean $50 for the pair?? :)

It's been a long time since I've recorded acoustic guitar with them so I can't really comment.

Buy them, you won't regret it.

At $50 each the AT3035 is a great option...just get a couple off of ebay.
