Just Killing Time
Discuss

Few covers that did it for me:
Thin Lizzy - Whiskey in the Jar (orig: The Dubliners)
Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower (orig: Bob Dylan)
Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah (orig: Leonard Cohen)
Nirvana - The Man Who Sold the World (orig: David Bowie)

Ones that didn't:
Madonna - American Pie (orig: Don Mclean)
Celine Dion - You Shook Me All Night Long (orig: AC/DC)
Korn - One (orig: Metallica)

I'd be interested to see what covers you guys love and loath :D

Oh, speaking of Korn covers, I'll probably be shot for this but I quite enjoy
their covers of Cameo's "Word Up" (prefer the original) and Pink Floyd's "Another
Brick in the Wall" (can't really decide between the two, love em both)

Be gentle :o :p

Its not too often that I find a cover BETTER than the original. There are covers that I do enjoy, quite a few actually, but not many that I think are better.

Pretty much the best cover of all time is The Beatles' Twist and Shout...they really set the bar with that one. Screw the Isley Brothers (and the person who did it first, whose name escapes me). Joe Cocker's With a Little Help From My Friends is another one that is superior to the original.

Also, when Blackmore's Night did a cover of 16th Century Greensleeves, which is better than Rainbow's original (can that really be considered a cover, since Blackmore wrote the song and was in both bands?)

A lot of times when people remake songs they are just wishing that they did the original, and that almost always sucks. I like it when they take the song to a new level.

In 1968, I was 12, and this was pretty much what me and my friends wanted to be (it might be the earliest thing that we thought was heavy metal):

here's the original:

The blue cheer version sounds quite heavy for the 60's. I like it :)

Zoot's 1970 heavy-metal rendition of Eleanor Rigby. Don't know if it's ever been heard outside of Australia.

Checkin that out now, I'm a little surprised. It's quite good!
Took a while to get into it, a lot of guitar wank at the start
but once the "I look at all the lonely people" came in I just
thought... "niiiicceeee" :D

The original kicks ass but this is completely different.

For those too lazy :D

This is really f***in cool:

If it was a very popular song...then it's hard for me to get the original out of my mind long enough to appreciate the cover...but every once in awhile someone finds a way to pay tribute to the original while at the same time doing the cover in an original way without it sounding lame and a total destruction of the original.

Are you talking about making your own covers of songs?

No...I was talking about well-known artists that do covers.

But if I was going to do a band gig again...then that's the way I would want to do any covers we did...
...though sometimes you just play the song as best as you can, and leave it at that. :)

The beauty of doing one-off covers at live gigs is that most of the audience are
too drunk to care and just wanna let loose, and there won't always be that
evidence, ahem, I mean RECORDING of it if you did it badly :D

Blue Cheer's version of Summertime Blues is pretty badass, but still doesn't compare to The Who. Their's is the definitive version IMO.

The Who - Live at Woodstock, August 1969 (also youtube their Isle of Wight performance at 1970 as well, which is just as good)

Also, that cover of Eleanor Rigby rocked. Hard.

Gotta say, I preferred Blue Cheer's version for some reason.

+1 for Eleanor Rigby though

I usually only like covers when they do something new with the song. Slavishly recreating the original is pretty boring to me. That's why I generally like cross-genre covers. Above Eleanor Rigby cover is pretty cool.

Machinae Supremacy's (chiptunes-metal) cover of Melanie C's ("Sporty" Spice) I turn to you is one of my favorite covers.

My band in college used to play a punk cover of America's Siter Golden Hair and segue that into We're Not Gonna Take it. Narcissistic to bring it up I know, but I really enjoyed that cover. :D

Scarborough Fair

I know this song has been done to death for hundreds of years, and I know it's
a traditional English song, but what I'd define as the "original" (in modern terms) is Simon and Garfunkel's version:
[video=youtube;<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="https://www.youtube.com/v/BYQaD2CAi9A&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="https://www.youtube.com/v/BYQaD2CAi9A&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>]video[/video]

Queensryche do a cover of it (2 actually, I think), not too different from the
original but it's pretty damn cool.

Now, here's the cover version, which I prefer to the original:

It's AMAZING (and IMO, the chick is easier on the eyes than S+G :p )

Hope you guys enjoy it :)
