Should I go for it?

Well for the past year and a half I've been running Audacity, pretty much the best DAW you're gonna get for free. It's a pretty sorry excuse for a DAW. But hey its free. I've read a whole lot of reviews and articles, and I think that Reaper is really the best bang for your buck. I can get some pretty good sounding tracks just with Audacity, but it's very limited. Reaper is a full functioning program and I will be able to get better products. I don't have the money to buy Pro Tools or Cubase and Reaper is only $60. Should I do it?

You can get a trial a reaper that never runs out for free. The only difference is it is limited with certian functions. I've only used it a handful of times so I really can't vouch for it but download the trial and give it a try before you buy it. Then if you like it spend the cash on it. From what I've been hearing around here, it's probably useful to have even if you decide to get a more professional DAW further down the road.

Oh I forgot to add that I actually have the trial version, I've been using it for a few days and it's much more professional than Audacity. I haven't gotten a chance to track drums on it yet though. I think once I get a few more things in the studio that are a necessity I will go ahead and buy it.

it'll do everything you need for $60...take the plunge :)

No . . . the trial version of Reaper is not limited in any way.

It is a great program and the price is hard to beat.

REAPER is not limited at all, even as a "Trial" version.

But, just in case there's any misunderstanding, no DAW "SOUNDS" better than another one. It's the features that make the difference.

Having said that, you can't do better than REAPER.

You should have no trouble with Reaper. I use it every now and then when I absolutely need a VST plug.

I just purchased the $60 license for Reaper, and it is VERY much worth it. This DAW is a bargain at that price, for what it's capable of doing.

I used to use Audacity too, but then a friend showed me Reaper, and I haven't looked back since.

So then its more of a donation. Idk I have no money for this stuff and would focus on putting that towards more gear rather than a donation. I guess I'm just cheap.

Oh well if it's not limited at all and doesn't run out I guess I'll just keep using it.
Thanks dudes

Well worth it! True the trial version has the exact same features as the "paid" version. The license agreement says you pay for it after 30 days if you want to keep using it. Its actually pretty cool of them to do it that way. Even I actually paid for it. Its kind of a "hand shake" deal. Its fucking great software, and they update it constantly. Man up, do the right thing and pay for it, or quit using it after the "trial period". :)

No, its not a donation. Its paying for the software. They set the price and the terms when you download and install the software. Its not a suggestion. Think of it as them just not doing a very good job of enforcing their fee with pain in the ass codes and dongles and shit.

Then you can't afford to do this stuff. Try knitting instead.Your DAW software IS part of your gear. That's an overly kind way to put it.

G.

relax man, I already blew all my money on a firestudio and logic pro, so I have a DAW. damn, just sayin.....

I think the free trial thing was a great idea on their part. If someone is going to download it an not pay for it, then they never would have paid for it in the first place, so they're not losing any money on those people. But those people, even though they didn't pay for it, will likely recommend it to someone who will download it and pay for it.

if I knew that after 30 days I had to buy or uninstall, I would have never bothered to download it in the first place, but knowing that I could use it for more than 30 days was a good enough push to get me to try it. Now that I have I own it and recommend it to people. i also got the commercial license to use at work.

I'm pretty sure that based on their model, they are going to take over the world.

Actually, this isn't true. Check out the "Fair Pricing" box on the side of this page:

http://www.reaper.fm/purchase.php

The "Discounted" license will be applicable to most users of Reaper, but those who are making a decent living using the software (even if it's not their main DAW) will need to pay $225. This distinction is overlooked quite a bit.
