Valve Mic selection

Well that's just it they are sm and behringer and you'll get what you pay for. Now your from down under and one of my best tube mics is the rode k2 what is the matter with that mic in your view?

I tend to agree with Moresound. Focus less on the valve and more on the mic. Consider Rode NTK or K2. My basic conclusion? If you can't afford an NTK, you can't afford a valve mic, and buying a Behringer, or any other dirt cheap Chinese mic will not help that.-Richie

Studio Projects T3 is nice too, or an older M77

Wait, have I been missing something here? That Behringer actually has t000bs in it!? Whoooah, I assumed it was just a light behind a little plastic screen :p

(...which to be honest it may as well be)

I agree with Kenny. The T3 is a bit more than a cheap Chinese mic. However, I suspect that in the land down under, the price point on the Rodes are a bit more attractive.-Richie

shiner inc ...now I'm just a little curious are the rode mics inexpensive in Australia compared with other major companies and that would be in USD.
I know the mark up in the US is high but it has to go past a few hands along the way.

As I understand it, it's more related to tariffs, and everything costs twice as much in Australia, give or take, but only half again as much if it's made in any country that's in the British Commonwealth. So-Canada is also OK. Unfortunately, there aren't too many Tanzanian mics. Darrin recommends AT4060, which is probably about $2000 US in Australia. And in spite of what he says, NTK is a very good mic, which is ideally suited to the original poster's purposes. For the record, AT4060 *is* a very good mic.-Richie

And the NTK is made in Australia!

If you cannot afford a good valve mic buy a good transistor mic which will be cheaper and still sound better than a cheap valve mic.

Cheers

Alan.

Right on...a FET mic is also a pretty good way to get the tube vibe.

Richie--- we have to find a way to get some good mics at a descant price to those poor b*st*rds in Australia and all those other countries that have to pay a couple thousands of dollars for a mic that we pick up for 599.99 or as much as 50% less than that if your fortunate enough to be able to get them at dealer price. How does ebay work for them ? do they still have to pay customs/Inport tax ?

Of course there's a way, Moresound. It's called international smuggling. The only question is- would you rather spend the next 5-10 in their prison or our Federal penitentiary? I've seen our prison population. I'll take my chances in theirs.-Richie

whoa well guess there's not that much to do about that now is there

Which raises the interesting questions:
how much of a discount from your local market price would you require for a 57 that's been in someone's <ahem> cavity?
And how much profit would you need to make to insert one (or multiple) into said cavity?

Your margins people... they're razor thin and feel just as sharp.

:D
