kcearl

I see deaf people
firstly thanks for all the original comments, I've tried to implement what was suggested and I'm going to be more fastidious with my mixes before I post them here and waste peoples time..

I tried acoustic drums but they didn't work and I ditched the last track I had as it was over ambitious...these parred down ones seem to work..though my recordings can hardly be called energetic

anyhoo suggestions gratefully received and thanks to all that listen :)

PS had to change my "band name" as my last choice was a women's online clothes store...which is better than my very first choice which was a gay and lesbian chat site...kcearl is a fag..I know

EDIT: tweaked the drums as suggested :)

Very unique sound. I like the vocals and the synths sound cool. The drums, especially the snare, don't sound good to me. Maybe it's the sound you were after, but they sound fake.

thanks man

yeah they're meant to sound fake..took me ages to get that snare sound lol

they're meant to sound like a mid 80's drum machine but I don't want to keep using 808 or 909 samples..maybe they'd be easier as modern samples are just too good to deliberately get to sound that bad

thanks for listening...its not the most cheerful of tracks ;)

Ok, I'm trying to recall the last version...I'm thinking this is an improvement as the arrangement isn't quite the same full-on synth assault that was the 1st version, yes?

I think I get where you're going with the drum sound, but can it be fattened up a bit somehow? I know it is a certain sound and there is value in contrast, but the thin crisp digital sound of the drums against the dark guitars and vocals seems almost too much to me...I dunno...artistic liscense and all..

It is well put together as is, but I still think it could gel a bit better.

Love that repeating envelope filter sound that comes and goes...

yup..i tamed the synths from the start, i think it gives it some dynamic that it didnt at first

Ill have another go with the drums..Im not convinced that a "real" sounding kit is the way forward but I have far more samples to use..after the first poster commented I had a listen to some DR55 samples I had from the era..they are far more synthetic but definitely darker so Ill give them a shot

thanks man for taking the time...it looks like im up for another late one lol :)

it sucked! i hated it!

ha, just kiddin man. i really liked it.
i like the way you do your vocals. and turns to dust is always stuck in my head

you get a rep point.

ooo thats put me over the edge ;)

thanks man...what did you think of the drums?

I really thought I nailed them..I even listened to gary numan, blancmange, human league and OMD before i recorded them..you know how much punishment that is??!!! lol

i thought they were a little too quite but then again im listening on shitty laptop speakers and im used to metal songs which have the drums pretty upfront so thats having some influence on me

but hell what do i know. im a retarded newblet

hey Im a RN too...and you've got a pair o' ears :)

ive tried to thicken them by adding a kick and doubling up the snare sample with a DR55 one...its still the same plodding beat but hopefully less thin and brittle sounding

thanks for the suggestions on the drums guys...they're much better now and sit in the mix better...my original snare was pitched too high so it made me back down in other areas...

i love this place :)

That sounds about 1,000x better than what you posted a few days ago. I dare say it might have some actual warmth to it??!?!!?!!!

Cool. Love the distorted vocal effect. Of course, that's just how all ART Tube Preamps sound, LOL. It's hard to do an effect like that without it becoming grating after awhile, but I think you pulled it off.

The only real nit I have across the entire mix is that the fake snare needs to come up. The fake handclaps are at a pretty good level in terms of cutting through, but the snare just feels too light.

But I sort of don't want you to fuck it up, either,...because this feels really close. I really enjoyed it, which is not always the case.

thanks man..if you say the snare needs to come up..up it will come...no point in arguing with a bloody texan ;)

yeah its much better than my first attempt..I'm embarrassed at my laziness at times but this is the last time I bother folks with half arsed attempts..it serves me no purpose

the vocals were re-recorded but due to my lack of grit I have to use effects on them..you are right I think I pulled these off but not by much! :)

thanks for listening Chris

Yeah, bring up the snare, but don't change the sound, 'cept to add a ton of reverb to it.

I remember hearing some old Robert Plant CD a while back and the drums were horrendous. Frikkin 80's state of the art drum patch on an 8 bit machine or something. Sounds like something from Mario Bros. And can you believe, he did that after recording with John Bonham for how-many-years??? Traitor!!!

this is not what you've got, it's way better. I can hear this in a dance club... rave?? or something.

cool man,

Thanks man...its really hard to get modern samples to sound as bad as 20+yr old sounds...I was listening to a blancmange track...mostly done on a jupiter, and the drums were laughably awful..I do like how they had no intention of realism with the snare coming out one speaker and the kick out the other with toms dancing all over the place...classic stuff :)

brought up the snare but i think there's a wobble in the bass at the beginning after I bounced it to audio...not sure what happened??

never went daft on the reverb..but im stubborn like that ;)

It's hard to tell what's supposed to sound cheesey and what's not. :p

I think this is okay, but keep hunting for that elusive perfect snare sample. This one don't work.

That spacey synth solo at 1:56 freaked out my weiner dogs. :D :D

im sticking with the snare..a mans gotta stand up what he thinks is right once in his life! lol

Im just toning it down and fixing that bass wobble then thats it..I hate the bloody song now :D

the synth is set to a weiner dog frequency...the only other dogs affected by it are manchester terriers and rhodesian ridgebacks :)

thanks for listening man..I know this genre can damage you mentally...but you got my mix there :D

If that's the snare you're sticking with, that's fine, but make it pop more. Maybe even put like a big, gated reverb on it. It sounds pretty bad on it's own, so at least put some sexy clothes on it. :D

As for my dogs, occasionally they flip out over what I listen to in here. The wife is out shopping and the kids are awake, so I can crank the monitors pretty loud right now at 8:50 am Texas time. My weiners love some sine wavs and synths. :D

ill do that with the snare..I think someone else mentioned that as well..it should hopefully make it fall back into the other instruments

your dogs have taste with synths..if they could only train their master into what constitutes decent music :D

hope your epics at the keyboard stage ;)

Dude, I am only about the rock. Mindless, dumb, drive fast music. That's all I care about. There is a small passage in my epic clusterfuck where I have some deep, low, semi-grumbling synths running underneath a distorted bass solo. Totally gay and awesome. :D

I'm thinking I will put some Jerry Lee Lewis 50's style piano in there too. There's some rockabilly influence during one part that I think it would fit. But it's gonna be real, and really played by me. No MIDI shit. :D
