Hey guys, so I just bought an Mbox Mini 2. It only has one XLR output, and I'm eventually going to probably want to record drums. is there a way I can buy something that would turn that one XLR output into say 5 or 6? Something similar to a power strip going into an outlet (in theory).
Ultimately I'm just trying to avoid spending more money, haha. :)

The short answer: no.

If you want to record drums with multiple mikes, then you will need an interface that will accommodate, at the outset, the number of mikes you want to use.

Not really and it would sound awful too if you could. taking the output from 8 sources, jamming it into one channel and running into a single cheap pre would just be a mess.

Generally you need one input and one pre amp per channel (mic)

Most people Who I've heard talking about drums feel that 4 channels is generally the minimum for getting a reasonable sound.

If you want more channels your going to need to get a mixer with several pres than can send a stereo out to your mbox or a different interface with a lot more inputs and pre amps

So now I guess my question is; what interface should I buy?

Without trying to get all zen on you, only you can answer that

but if you can tell us the following we might be able to make some suggetions

Mac or PC
How much are you going to spend
do you want USB, Firewire or PCI connectivity to the computer
How many inputs (XLR In) do you realistically need
What Software will you be using (Pro tools for example is very limiting on what equipment will work withit)

That should get you closer to knowing wht interface you should buy

Read this too http://www.tweakheadz.com/guide.htm

Mac
I'm hoping to keep it relatively cheap, say around $300-$500.
Realistically; I would need 5 or 6 inputs.
Working with Pro Tools/Garageband(for pre-prod)

well if you're staying within protools le (which is not a bad choice, imo) you're going to be getting in a little over a grand for what you want. something like the 003 rack. it has 4 inputs. or you could shop around for an 002.

I've got some fairly good results using a decent mixer to mic up the kit and sending a stereo feed to an interface as described above. LOTS of trial and error though to make sure it's right because you can't change levels later or isolate any drums for EQ or FX. So you need to get the mix right and use the mixer's EQ if needed to fix any problems. Not ideal I know but when you're on a budget you have to get creative.
