Has anyone just won a BR-20 on E-bay? The sellers were a public TV station. Please respond, I have it!!!!!! It never ends!!!
VP:mad:

Well the guy who has my 42B will understand. There where 2 auctions on e-bay by a public TV station. I won the 42B and some other pissed off person won the BR-20. They mixed up the shipping. It never ends. this is almost funny. It is good to know that e-bay will stand behind the buyers. They sent me a prepaid shipping label and I will get a refund but what about the 42B? Maybe the other bidder will read this.

Good gracious...I did that once as a Seller...mixed up a shipment. Wasn't a massive chunk like an atr tho'...I tracked down where the items went, expedited reshipment and gave everybody discounts. It was a sick feeling when I realized what I'd done. I hope the Seller in your case feels sick too. Hope it gets worked out.

So...you mean you got the box and opened it up expecting to see a 42B and instead saw a BR-20??

Yes, I was surprised. I am usually suspicious of everything, The tracking info said 60 lbs, a 42 B is a lot more. Also the box was rather small.

Well the 42B has been tracked down. It still has to be shipped. I am going to send the TV station an armored car to pick up the machine. I couldnt believe it but they are letting me keep the BR-20. Only problem is it was damaged in shipping. You win some. You lose some!

SWEET!!

How badly damaged was it?

Cosmetic, structural or functional?

Whatcha gonna do with it?

Man, what a blessing that the situation is on the way to rectification and that was pretty cool of them to give you the BR-20. It is indeed an AWFUL feeling when you drop your hard-earned dosh on a rare piece of fragile gear and it comes out wrong...AWFUL feeling so I'm genuinely happy it is resolving.

Phew!

That's cool Pete. How much was the rental on the armored truck?

It was packed with peanuts and those useless "air pllows". UPS apparently shipped it label side down (there were no this side up labels) and all the front parts that protrude, reel hubs, tension arms, rollers, head covers, etc, were resting on the cardboard. You can see the impressions in the cardboard. It came with the cord cut, they said that was an accident. I dont know if I want to start another repair project or not. It is a terrible feeling when something gets damaged in shipping. You keep saying " If only". I am going to send them the toughest cardboard box I can find and bubblewrap, cardboard corners, tape and anything else I can think of. This is the third machine I have had shipped in less than a year that was damage because of bad packing. UPS doesnt help the situation, but if it is packed with them in mind you have a chance.

I was thinkling of buying some kind of padded road case. I could send it ahead of time to avoid these situations. Even after you plead with people they still dont pack it right. It is not hard to do.

VP, no disrespect intended, really but you shouldn't be encouraging the business of shipping those wonderful machines, which, more often than not get damaged in shipping, not due to UPS, FEDEX or USPS but because of incompetent sellers who can't pack to save their lives and, unfortunately, buyers who continue, despite overwhelming odds, to trust these so called "sellers". Most of them can pack a plush teddy bear right but not a complex and heavy electronics device. It takes knowledge, dedication, time, respect, money and resources to do it right. The question always begs to be asked: Haven't you learned? If both buyers and sellers knew how packages are thrown around, dropped, bashed, with no regard to labeling on the box, you'd quickly get nausea just thinking of having something shipped the "typical" way. Palletizing is always best but if you can't do it, another option would be this:

It's from a larger thread on packing, which everyone should read.

Seriously, after the 3 damaged decks... You should have changed your strategy after the 1st one.

Peace.:)

My strategy? I did all I could to have these people ship it correctly. I sent them the link from this forum on "packing 101" I sent e-mail after e-mail regarding my concern about damage. Their response was "We are an understaffed public TV station with limited time and resources" do you want their address so you can reprimand them also?

OK, but you are on your 3rd damaged deck this year. That should have given you the idea that sellers, most of them, don't really care. That "101 packing" thread has some serious faults and one of them is finding a willing seller. Most will simply not bother. I think that you as a buyer must not leave the details of packing / shipping till after you've won an item but before. If your seller shows modest interest and no commitment or you are not 100% sure of his intentions, don't bid. I also think the 101 packing thread is too long and has too much info and can be interpreted in a number of ways. Most sellers in no way will get acquainted with the info, as intended. What can you do? Well, again, you've seen in real life this to be true, with your multiple damaged decks. Seriously, look local and forget shipping. A box and bubble wrap won't do anything and neither will one of those road cases. You ideally need someone who's specialized in proper boxing and strapping that to a pallet or pray that the seller will follow your typical boxing instructions. Again, I'm not talking about this recent transaction but that you should have ended your foray into eBay / shipping when you've had your 1st damaged deck, even more so the 2nd.

EDIT: Just to be clear, by different strategy, I was referring to doing something different like looking local and forgetting shipping. I mean, you can't expect a different result using the same actions.

Each time the damage was the same, The deck moved around and punched through the box. Had they simply just added more stuffing, they would have been fine. I was quite aware the first time of the shipping and packing problems on e-bay. The 3 damaged shipments were the minority of my shipments on e-bay, most come with no problems at all. I will decide when to end my own forays. Thanks for your post.

Heck, do what you want. I'm just stunned at how predictable people are. Rather than take what I write as a bit of advice, maybe learn from it, as rough as it may sound, you take it on a personal level, with a "kiss my ass... I'll do what I want" attitude. That's fine.

Also remember that those machines, these works of art, enter the pool of used market merchandise, at one time and another and it's a shame someone may inherit one of those in a battered state, however major or minor. It's getting worse all the time and it's really not just your problem.

What makes you think I dont look local? I found an MS-16 25 minutes away last May.
Believe me I am just as passionate about these machines as you. I do all I can to protect these machines. I drove to NYC on a sunday a month ago to pick up a Tascam. I coudnt drive to Indiana this time. I do all I can. Thanks for your advice but dont be so demanding.
