ok so i know that isolation boxes have been covered in other threads but my idea is a little different.

instead of have a tiny box with a lid and a permanently fixed speaker mounted inside, i was thinking of building a really big box (since i have the space for it) big enough to fit a 4x12 in it with some room to spare and lining the inside of it with auralex sonnomat 48 (http://accessories.musiciansfriend.com/product/Auralex-Sonomatt-48?sku=472384) and making it air tight with a lid or door to roll or drop the cab into.

that way i can record anything from a tiny little combo amp all the way up to a 4x12 cab without having incredibly loud sound level that bug my family. it would also help control outside noise bleed into the mic. and i know alot of people complain about there not being any room noise or whatever when using an iso box but 1). im gonna make it big enough to have a little breathing room and on top of that wouldnt a little reverb fix that?

any opinions on this? any suggestions or tips? any input is appreciated.

Build it big enough and you can install a control room...

yeah thats basically the idea. i have a small room in the back corner of my unfinished basement that im using right now for my "studio". and having a box to keep an amp in to record outside of that room somewhere in my unfinished basement would be great. only thing is i dont wanna build more than a box so another room would be out of the question.

just wondered if the box idea was a good one...

Sorry . . . my brain frizzled . . for some reason I got it into my head that the subject was still the big thermos idea.

So . . .

The idea is . . . interesting, not unheard of. But 'good'? Hmmm . . . probably yes.

Interesting dimensional extrapolation of an iso box but...
it is, essentially, a big cab in a big box with a single microphone close mic'ing a single cone in the cab.
What does that suggest to you?

it suggests that i would be able to record amps of all sizes with out completely annoying the crap out of my family.

thats the basic idea of the box. not only that but it would allow me to separate the sound coming from my amp from the sound coming from my monitors instead of having it all in the same room but it would also keep the level of noise coming from the amp from annoying other people.

i could also (if there was no one home to annoy) keep the lid open with the speakers facing the opening and place mics wherever i wanted in and around the box. so close miking just one speaker isnt the only possibility and who said i could only mic one speaker?

Airtight is not all there is to it. If the top and sides of your box are not rigid and massive, they will serve as secondary radiators and still transmit a lot of sound energy.

It's not for me, here's why:

For me the problem is not having a big enough room, you're making a small room smaller. The room sound is super, super important because in the end you're playing a room, not just your amp. I'd rather use tiny tube amps and get my sound that way.

I never feel the need for 4 12"'s cabs on songs but if you do I understand that.

Follow your gut instinct.

lol that thing is 700 dollars. and what happens when someone wants me to record THEIR amp with THIER cab with THEIR speakers.

for me that thing just isnt worth it.

The attached photgraph you referred to has 1 speaker close mic'd - that's pretty much what most do in the studio & on stag: mic the sweet sounding speaker in the cab. To mic the entire cab is a big job - 1 per speaker in a quad? 1 centred & back to capture a mix? Neither is a decent option for an iso cab as they pushe the size envelope wide open to isolation ROOM.
IF you intend to mic it differently you didn't mention, imply, suggest, nod toward or state that.
Your ..........
should actually be three full stops, (... ), to be grammatically accurate.
Sorry to have rained on your parade but you did ask for constructive commentary & ideas.
How about...
"Wow, that's great! Go for it! I'll order one from you when you're done"?
Is that more in line with what you were angling for?
