Hi guys! Been too long, I missed my peeps! :) Been super busy, working on a new CD and I got to fulfill a 30-year dream last week! Through a Facebook mutual friend, I got the privilege of hiring Chris Vadala (Chuck Mangione's flute/sax guy from the mid 70s through the 90s regularly, and still intermittently) to play three tunes for me. I flew to the DC area last weekend and recorded with him, and this is the first tune go get settled...

Alone (First song on the list)

Chris is on the flute, I'm playing everything else...

Enjoy!!

I should probably post my setup, duh...

MOTU 8pre into Adobe Audition 3
Gretsch Renown drums (8 mics)
Peavey Foundation bass (1983)
Martin DXME (2 different parts) through LR Baggs Para-Acoustic DI
Yamaha MO8 synth (Rhodes, strings)
Korg Triton 61 (Ethereal pad)
Cymbal rolls and bar chimes are stored samples I recorded myself, it's easier than re-playing them manually every time. :)

Chris Vadala was recorded at Music Unlimited in Rockville MD by James Bazen.

Very nice. All sounds great and there's not much to improve upon. If anything, the only thing I could remotely suggest is bringing the acoustic guitar up a little to better complement the flute. Especially during the break at 1:15.

love the bass tone.

thanks for sharing....

You're a lucky guy - but then your material is of a quality that people like him are happy to play on. That flautist made the perfect addition to the song Alone. Beautiful arrangement - flawless performance....

I have trouble getting people to NOT be on my recordings - thumping feet upstairs/furnace/cat meows etc...

Thanks very much! I actually started with the guitars a little bigger, but it was more difficult to control the upper mids; they fought with the flute for space, and when I rolled the offending frequencies back instead, it just got muddy-yet-big. I imagine I'll probably tweak stuff a few more times before release, when I've gone back with fresh ears in a few weeks... :)

It sounds awesome, Phil. I was lucky enough to get "sneak preview" of it. Just want to say again how great I think this is.

Sounds very good. I think the rotating speaker effect might be a little too prominent, but it sounds good.

Friendly bump - keeping this on P1 for a bit....

While I'm here - Phil
- who are you using for CD manufacturing?
- you need to update your avatar ;)

I released Dichotomy of Silence using Oasis. I did Heaven through Kunaki (thanks for the tip, Rami!), and I'll be doing Autumn Breeze through Kunaki, and if sales/airplay warrants, I may have to do a production run, in which case I'd use Oasis without question.

I do in fact need to update my avatar. :) I have just the thing.

Ok, I got it unblocked...:)

Uh, wow. That sounds just about exactly as it should. I listened a few times. Great mix...wouldn't change a thing:D.

Phil, I would...listen again actually.
Lovely work & great score with the flautist!

You're always so damned harsh, Ray... :) Thanks man. That session was one to tell the grandkids about, in 20 or so years when I have them.

Man... Ya know you've got a great piece of work when the instrumentation alone brings emotions up in your listeners. That flute was gorgeous, and I found that the complementing bass line accented the flute wonderfully. Thanks for sharing. I'm now listening to your whole playlist based on this song alone.

One thing, though, I found detracted from the emotion of the song was the "wah-wah" sounding instrument... Not sure what it was... It was a good sounding instrument, just a bit too much "wah-wah" in it. I hope that made sense. Also, hopefully, it's just my headphones that are causing the sound to become too prominent.

Other than that, man, - you've got yourself a wonderful tune.

Thanks much dodgeaspen.. :D

Poetic,

Thanks very much... The sound you're referring to is the phase-shifted Rhodes patch in my MO8... It's part of the patch, and it is definitely more prominent headphones, almost distractingly so; but it's much more coherent in a open soundfield. I actually narrowed the field considerably from what the actual patch is, but I was specifically going for an old-school 70's sound (Dave Grusin, Bob James, Chuck Mangione, Richard Tee), so I actually wanted that kind of movement...

I'm very glad you enjoyed it! :)

If I hadn't known who the flautist was, I would've said this had a real Bellavia feel to it. You captured that vibe extremely well. I'm listening on Tannoy PBM 6.5's in my office at work....the soundfield is very generous...maybe a touch crowded by that relentless flange, but the style dictates that.:)

Very well done and the mix sparkles.
