aka Variaxman
Did this one for fun the other day...working on getting better guitar tones captured....used my variax for most of the tracks as well as a Gibson Firebird for 1 track...Vocals suck...pretty much there just to map out the parts/changes of the songs...think I'm going to re do them when I'm happy with the music end of things...although not sure I'm capable of much better:p..anyways was going for a kinda clean crunchy guitar sound , wondering how it sounds to the fine ears here...

That sounds great! I'd advise boosting the vocals a little. The quality is really good. I think the drums are clipping in some parts, so maybe knock the trim down some. Otherwise it's a great recording!

Thanks squibble! I kinda hid the vox as they were my 1st attempt and all over the place as far as being in and out of key...have a better feel for them and think I can do them better on my next attempt...I do have the drums cranked a bit as I really dig 'em!:p They are loops from Simon Phillips drums on demands collection and were meant for The Who song "Can't Explain" ..I sliced and diced them to kinda make them fit this and give the song a bit of that Moon flavor!
Thanks for listening and posting your comments, I appreciate it!

Yeah, not a fan of the vocals, but the rest was pretty good. Drums seem a little in-my-face, but that may be what you were going for (I understand they are loops).

Musically really good VariQueepman,
I think you'll do better with the vocals - you usually improve with repeats.
Have you listened to Eddie & The Hot Rods' version of this? It's probably better than the Who's.
Give it a listen if you can.
Yours is more in the Eddie spirit.

This is my absolute favorite Who song!

I'm a little pissed though. You beat me to it. ;)

I've been meaning to do it, but just haven't gotten to it yet.

Anyway, I'm listening on a laptop in Bumfuck, Louisiana so I can't comment on the mix, but I just had to at least check it out. Kick ass song to cover.

Would like a bit more bass guitar otherwise a great remake...:D:D:D:D

I think you've got a great tone on the guitars. I think when you redo the vox and bring them up, you're going to need to bring the drums also.

Cool man.

I dunno, my favorite early Who song has got to be I Can't Explain. Of course, I'm not a big fan of pre-Sell Out Who (although the Live versions of A Quick One from the Tommy era are top notch), but this is still a decent song.

EDIT: Awhile back I did a drum track for My Generation (Live at Leeds version) for a forum member from another message board, and later some random guy from Soundclick wanted to use it for his own cover. Pretty cool I might add. Maybe I could get a business for doing Who drumming.

Yeah those vocals are bleh:p...I tried to punk em up a bit to fit my lame warbley voice....gonne try agian after practicing on my daily commute to work with the instrumental only mix of this on the car stereo....I did want a strong aggressive mix on the drums...will try and get them to fit a little better upon remix...thanks for listening!

dodgeaspen I'm a big fan of The Who.

Me 2!

Hey ray....never heard of Eddie and the Hot Rods...I always dig the bands you mention in your post so will have to look em' up...I love this song, but always wish it had a little more aggressive edge to it, so that was my goal on doing this....my real band plays this one as well , but we tend to do it more like the original.

Greg_L This is my absolute favorite Who song!

Ha! Yeah man, I could definetly picture you doing this one great! Hope you can check it out when you get back, would like to hear your comments!

Hey Chili, thanks for the good word on the gits man...worked a little harder then my usual haphazard way of tracking guitars, I'm pretty happy with them also....drums are definetly gonna be up there in every mix I do...thanks for the comments!

Have you heard Green Days version of "A Quick One"? My Fav Who tune and probably in my top 5 all time tunes, I was jacked to hear it , and was actually kind of a let down... not sure what it was , just a little to polished sounding I guess....
Yeah man, I love the "My Generation" debut album....straight up raw rock...songs like "Legal Matter","So Sad About Us", "
La La La Lies" "Can't Explain", "The OX" etc..are just awesome...after that, I really dig the early singles, but think there much better live, like the Leeds album or Woodstock, Montery etc...just did not have the same fire in the studio as there live counterparts...dude, I think you could make some scratch doing loops , see a lot of pro drummers putting stuff out

Hi Idol! I am going to try a diffrent bass track as well as vocals...want to get a little more cutting bass tone, more like live Entwistle lead bass thing I think...Thanks man!

I'm on laptop in Maine, Q, so no mix stuff from me either.

I will add, though, that I thought you did the tune justice. I liked this version of it.

The Who were all about the bass.

Yeah, the dichotomy between live Who and studio Who is larger than every band I know. I think they finally got good in the studio with Who's Next (even Tommy is pretty tame), but they never compared with their live performance. Live at Leeds ROCKS!

Thanks Kev, I'm afraid to think what it sounds like on a laptop tho':p...thanks for listening!

Back home listening on monitors.....

I love it! There's some things I think could be better though - just to my ears. You use drum loops right? If so, maybe you can't do anything about this, but it needs more crazy Moon-like drum fills. I like the snotty vocals, but the harmonies are missing and they make up a key part of the melody of this song. I think it could be a little faster too.

Overall though, I think the mix is pretty good. Vocals could be a little louder. again, kick ass song to cover and you did it justice. Well done.

Greg, I know man, those harmonies on the chorus are KEY! I just don't think I can pull them off...I try and i just end up with a bunch of tracks of me singing the same key/octave as the lead "vocal", in that nasally Ozzy vibe I got going on...It's funny, cause when my real band plays this one, the drummer and I do kinda cover the harmonies on the chorus etc, so I don't know why I can't at least get a little close...gonna try again.
There is not to many fills to choose from on the "moon mayhem':p group in my collection...I am going to try and chop and re-arrange them a little to get some increased drum action in there...was kinda keeping it simple for laying down the basic tracks and haven't got around to spicing them up yet....as far as speed goes...I did mess with the tempo being faster, but for some reason...it was even harder for me to sing...

Thanks for checking it man...looking forward to hear your version...I know it will rock the way i envision mine sounding If I could pull it off...:D

I've asked Voxxy is he wanted to collab on it with me since he says he can throw down some Moon craziness, but we never got past the talking about it phase. :p

I've got abunch of new originals to work on anyway, so it's probably gonna be a while. I'd like to do it though.
