Whats the best RAP MIC??!
Sorry, I am desperate for answers before throwing away at least $1700! Is this stuff any good?

Is it better to have one nice sized tracking room 13x10 and a tiny control room like 8x6 or one larger room with the computer in a corner 22x10ish

Also, I am thinking about buying 4 GIK tri traps, 6 242 acoustic panels, 1 monster trap, 12 4'' panels of OC703, and a bunch of 4'' thick auralex (for flutter echos and such, but mostly looks) and a bunch of thinner auralex for pure looks.

If I put all this stuff in my room, would it deaden it too much or no? Also, is it bad to mix all these different products. Thanks

Who is Megan Fox?

If you are recording your own stuff, go for the big room idea. You will have time to get your sounds together.

If you are recording other peoples stuff, you will need the control room so you can hear what the microphones hear before you record. Even though 8x6 is worryingly small.

First of all...you dont have to throw a bunch of money at auralux products....corragated foam is usually availible at most foam distributerships for arround a tenth of the price....bass traps....well go buy a few carpet remmnents....have them cut to the length of the floor to cieling, and roll them loosely to a 10" diameter...then cover them with a t-shirt material in a color you will like.

Where are my Megan Fox pics?

i'm with farview on the 1 room/2 room scenario.

i have to ask: why exactly would you buy expensive auralex products strictly for looks? so it "looks" pro even though it's not serving a utilitarian purpose? it doesn't add up. form follows function, imo.

you can make your own oc703 panels (lots of us have) for a fraction of the cost of buying any finished product, and if you do it right you don't have to sacrifice aesthetics. you can add frames, and while muslin and burlap are the covering of choice for cost savings, you can use speaker cloth (which is considerably more expensive, but still a lot less than buying traps) for a really pro look. you'll find tons of info on this in the "studio building" forum.

good luck! :)

nice lure, btw. ;)

One large room is much better than two rooms that are too small to sound any good.

Also, stay away from cheap foam and carpet. Cheap foam is not usually any good, even if the vendor says it is. And carpet is not a good way to treat a room either for many reasons. See my Acoustics FAQ. Rigid fiberglass and mineral wool are the best values in DIY room treatment.

Thanks guys. The reason I am buying auralex is for mostly looks, and to help out with the flutter echos. I know it may sound foolish but If I buy a little I feel it will help, plus look very nice and help in a vocal booth. I just am worried about making the room too dead. Also, if I am making one bigger room, should I put my computer against one of the walls, or in the middle? Thanks guys and I appreciate all the help you have given me. BTW Ethan, you are the reason I got into recording believe it or not. I stumbled across your posts while googling something and became very interested in the subject. I whole heartily appreciate what you do for this community. Likewise for Darren and all you guys.

Against or near the shorter wall, so the speakers fire the longer way down the room. More here:

How to set up a room

Awesome, thanks for letting me know.

From what I've heard you want a 10'x10' minimum recording space. Although it depends on what you're recording. Lower voiced instruments need more space or there's nothing you can do to make it sound good.

Computer against a wall of course, you might need the space in a pinch. That doesn't mean that you can't have it on rollers to put things where it sounds best once the room has been cleared.

Also, FOAM BAD. NO FOAM!!

Go with the larger room and treat with broadband absorbers.

Agreed and Agreed.

Carpet doesn't do it either.

Lol I went to GC and dropped 430 on 14 2'4 auralex BEFORE I READ THIS.
I understand foam is not ideal but I am not a DIY person unfortunatly, and it is auralex, not just regular foam or FBM.
Plus, to get these high school bands to come and spend money for me to record them, looks is a key ingredient to the mixture.
I am going to be putting it around my room by putting two next to eachother vertically(forming a nice size square) and will put about 2 squares on each wall.
Then I will put a few on the ceiling.
However, this is being done strictly for higher frequencies (i have a nasty echo in the room since the drums were moved into there) and for a nice look to the room.
Then, I am thinking about buying 4 or 5 tri-traps, 3 or 4 GIK 242 panels, and maybe messin with some 4'' 703 for a little more broadband trapping. My only fear is that the 4 tri traps will not be enough bass trapping.
Should I also buy a few 244 bass trap panels and throw them around the room or no. My main fear is deadening the room too much. =/ Thanks for all the answers by the way. I am learning pretty quickly because of this site.

I read this interview with Les Paul several years back where he said that if he built a new studio it would be just like a living room, one big room with couches and really no efforts like everyone does with foam and such, and little if any effort towards isolating instruments... accept the bleed through.

That's what I'd do, and it's very hard if not impossible to get the sound your heroes did in low ceiling rooms (like I have) - 10' and above please!

I know what you mean!

Just like the Beatles - they could have gone somewhere if they'd just stuck together! (and maybe worked up a few originals)

 Im beginning to think that you dont really have nude pics of Meagan Fox?!?!
