I need a nice and relatively inexpensive preamp to hook up to my HP laptop, probably not more than $200. I have a Shure 565SD microphone i will be using. thanks in advance.

Inexpensive interface with 2 preamps and extras like amp farm and options you wont find elsewhere go with the Line6 UX2.

M audio DMP3. Got mine for $129 from Proaudiostar on ebay. Works awesome, great choice for any small studio.

Yeah, your right. For some reason I thought he already had one when I answered this. Well then, if he is open minded about used items, maybe he can win this bid and have 8 solid channels.

+1 UX2 for your needs. I have never used it professionally but messed with one at a friend's place - great little tool.

If you can find a used Apogee Mini-me (firewire), those kick ass and sound excellent
