Using a mixer with MR-8?

I love the original MR-8 but I was wondering if I could improve my basic tracks by getting a mixer with EQ's, something along the lines of a Behringer, and plug my guitar into that for the EQ's and run from that into a track on the MR-8?
 
This is quite a common way of "front ending" the MR8. Any good mixer will do. Just treat the mixer output as a line input to the MR (wind the trim knobs to "line") Leave the Input A Select switch on Mic/Line and treat the MR8 as a simple recorder. Do you have the red MR8 or the MR8 Mk II?
I have a MR16 but the equalisation is crude and rudimentary. (33 preset EQ options) A Mixer, probably the Behringer 1002B, will be next. I miss the flexibility of a High, Med, Low set of knobs.
 
I have the red, first-generation MR-8. I have purchased a Behringer 802 mixer since posting this morning - can hardly wait for that thing to arrive. I was also wondering whether the "front-end" method I spoke of would be best or would it be better to do things the other way around by recording the basic tracks to the MR-8, then running the playback through the mixer and eq everything nicely and mix down to my PC?
 
No idea!! I suggest that you use the mixer first and equalise on that.

But you could (example) record on tracks 1 & 2, then play back through the mixer and re-record on tracks 3 & 4 and so on. (overdub)
In theory you can re-record through the mixer as often as you like but I suspect some degredation from the D to A converters.

On the MR16 I have two AUX OUT jacks. These can be allocated to any of the 16 tracks, so I use two patch leads to feed from the AUX OUT to the INPUT A & B and then I apply my EQ presets. So my raw recording stays on tracks 1/2 and my EQ recording goes on tracks 3/4.
 
I've used a Behringer UB802 on the front end of my MR8 for years. Learned about it here on HR. Works fine, Mr8 pres aren't very hot. The mixer also gives you phantom power for condenser mics. good luck

How are you going out of the Behringer to the MR-8? Which jacks? Not sure if this is the best way but last night I had a TRS cable coming out of the 802's headphone jack with the male stereo jacks going into the two inputs on my MR-8. Sounded fine but I'm wondering if it would be better to use the "Main Out" jacks?

I use the main outs. Works fine.
