I need a way to send audio from my computer to my mixer for playback without having it re-recorded on a new track (while recording a new track). I want to be able to listen to a previous track (on computer)while also monitoring the channels on my mixer.

Right now, I'm running the audio out of my mixer through "Record Out" RCA's--line in to the computer. Then, I'm running the audio out of my computer into my mixers "2 track". I'm monitoring through my mixers headphone out
Specs:
-EPM 6 Soundcraft Mixer
- 2 aux outs
-monitor outs (L & R)
-Mix Outs (L & R) w/ inserts
-Sony Acid 6 Music Studio

Please help me out. Greatly Appreciated

Try running your audio out of the mixer's mains (the XLR outputs).

Then take take the computer's output into the mixer's "two track", as you have been doing.

Press the two-track to monitor button.

Monitor via the headphone socket, or with speakers connected to the monitor outputs.

You could use the insert points on the channels to go to the line in on the computer. Just plug your jacks in half way.

gecko,
what would you suggest i use to couple the L & R XLRs to my Line in with?
i dont think dual female xlr to 1/8 in. are too common

The answer that you won't like is that you connect the XLR outputs of your mixer to the computer by getting an audio recording interface. It sounds like you are currently going from the line out of your mixer to the line in of the computer's onboard soundcard, and it is highly likely that even if you get your monitoring path sorted out, you will be dissatisfied with the results (because of the quality of most onboard cards for audio recording).

However, don't worry about the XLRs. Try NYMorningstor's suggestion. Stick a 1/4 jack halfway into the mixer's mains insert sockets. It might be easier to find an adapter that goes from 1/4 jack to 1/8 jack.

alright cool. thanks for the help. I was planning on going the audio interface way soon anyway, for multi tracking.

Interface would be good but in the meantime you could use this setup which is painful but works:
- plug your instrument into your mixer and pan it all the way to the left. Send the left line out of your mixer to the line in on your computer.
- send the headphone out of your computer to a different channel on your mixer and pan it all the way right.
- put on your headphones and play - you'll hear your new signal in one ear and your previous signal in the other ear.

It's cheesy but it works....again a USB or firewire interface would be better...
