Laughing my ass off! Good lyric!

The guit R is overpowering from 33 to 42sec...

The vox between 33 and 105 seconds need a few db upper;

Other than that, really really great! Everything! I love it! Kicks ass!

Very good stuff, mang. Great drumming throughout. Guitar loudness has already been pointed out. Good mix.

guitars have great crunch. how do you mic your cabs if you don't mind me asking? the part the jeff refers to where he says it sounds overpowering i think just sounds aggressive and i think it fits the tone of the lyrics well.

kinda sounds like 311 just without the snappy snare. especially the vocals. nice job.

Hey thanks guys for the input!

the tone of the guitars is definitely something I'm working with as we speak. Some other things in the mix I'm working on fixing as well.

grey: I actually DIed the guitars believe it or not! I used a line 6 POD distortion and really tweeked it out on the Hi gain setting summing both stereo channels to one mono channel. Very bare bones.

Let me see if I can get the ball rolling and throwing some new mixes up here soon. :)

hmmm maybe i should invest in something like that. i find it really hard to get the distorted guitar sound that i want with micing guitar cabs. for me whatever sounds good in the room doesn't necessarily translate well when recording it with mics. do you normally di your guitars or was it just for this recording?

Grey, I feel you on that exponentially.

I personally do both micing and DI technique well enough at any given moment, it depends on what I have available at the moment and what the song is asking for. I did DI on this project only because I felt the songs called for guitars in an absolute "no room" dry situation. Zero reverb helps get that edgyness without losing clarity.

Its like the art of getting the sound in your head to tape is what its really comes down to. Its a developing art for most of us I would think. :D

ps.

brand new version of the mix is up. I think this is the final. Also, I've included a really old school mix of this song when it was called "The Birth". I did it in 2005 before we decided to revisit old material. I guess just to show how production value can take a song leaps and bounds beyond expectation.

Let me know what you guys think!

I think it sounds pretty good. I get a 311 vibe which is good since is one of my favorite bands. Is this done on POD Farm? Do you mind sharing your settings? I really like that dist.

Thanks man :)

Sure! I don't mind sharing, I'll dive right in.

This was actually done on a borrowed Line 6 PODxt that I returned yesterday. So going from memory, I'll list out the notes:

-First things first, the guitar being used was a modified medium model Ibanez with Seymore Duncan pickups.

-As I mentioned before, I took both outputs and sent them to one channel on the mixer to make a thicker mono track.

-Starting from a blank setting and searching through amp modeling, I found the "HI Gain" amp to be my favorite BY FAR. The other ones really didn't do anything for me.

-I remember zeroing out the room ambience, so "0% room" and FX.

-In terms of the internal mic modeling, I'm pretty sure I went with the "on axis" mic setting.

-I can't remember the Cabinet model I used, but I THINK it was one of the 4x12 cabs.

-When it came to presence, I had that turned all the way down. At times I would turn it up no more than half way.

-Drive settings is where I think the secret comes out. Most people will crank the gain/drive during a recording, when in fact, the lowest possible drive sounds best on tape. So in other words, I turned the drive down just before the distortion lost its "grind". So about half drive/gain setting.

-I turned the channel volume all the way up and used the output volume as my way of adjusting volume.

-I did use the gating effect and the compressor very lightly (high threshold), I can't remember the exact settings. The gating won't actually do anything to shape the distortion.

-Everything else I pretty much left off

-In terms of EQing, wasn't really any kind of magic. I just tweak for full body: Good, deep, but not overpowering low end. The mids to lightly shape and scoop out the "telephone sound" problem and just enough high to give it a good clear upper end (about 75% up).

I could post a clip of just the raw guitar track if you want a reference track. I can't do it today, but I can have it by the end of the week. :)

Thanks for taking the time. That would be great so I can compare and try to find something in between. Appreciated.

yeah dude you have definitely improved in honing in your sound. guitars, drums, vocals and even bass sound much better in the new stuff. the song has improved also. it's a more focused song. would you say you just figured out how to record better or would attest it more to better gear? Probably a bit a both i'd assume.

Yeah...but I think before any of that, it's just a matter of giving it time. Like any art, you're always trying to better yourself. You give yourself time.

:D
