latency

I've been asked by my teacher to remake a song using midi and only on GS/GM. First I tried using Eastwest colossus because they have a GM bank but then I had a lot of memory problems.

I got almost no latency when I loaded an instrument in colossus either as standalone or in cubase. I tried using the windows wavetable sounds to keep everything simple but I got a lot of latency. Anyone know what's wrong? thanks

My setup is Core 2 duo 3.0 gHz
M-audio delta 2496
 
Using the Windows wavetable is problematic, because of its inherent latency.

If you are using the wavetable exclusively, the latency need not be a major problem.

However, when you couple it with a VSTi, the problems of latency become apparent and highly annoying.

I'm not sure what you can do about. Possibilities are:

1 to use the wavetable exclusively;
2 to use VSTi exclusively;
3 to use an external sound module (e.g. like a Sound Canvas); or
4 Some combination of 2 and 3.
 
Thanks for your reply. I tried using Roland sound canvas and it seems to be alright now. With wavetable however, I have the same problem when I use it with Sibelius. So is wavetable really that useless when inputting notes?

I can imagine the wavetable giving the same problems with Sibelius.

If you are entering notes one by one, the delay is irritating, but you can cope with it. Playing real time is more of a problem. You can use Sound Canvas with Sibelius as well.

The wavetable is okay for playing back stuff, but I expect you will find the SC has generally better sounds.
 
I tried using sound canvas in protools and I still got a noticable amount of latency. It's a lot better than wavetable but with sound canvas I still have to do a lot of editing because of the latency.

The thing is, my teacher is going to check my work on the school's system which has a roland external sound module so I'm not too worried about the sound when inputting the notes at home. I only have to have gs/gm commands on my song.

Is there any other softsynth out there that I can maybe try?
 
Well I don't have one at the moment and I would like to work at home as much as possible. We will be working with samplers the next semester so it would be too costly to buy a hardware sound module just for this purpose.

I'm not sure why you are getting latency with the Sound Canvas. It should not happen. What interface are you using?
 
The highest I can go with sound canvas in 68 milliseconds. If I go higher I get clicks. I have an m-audio 2496. It's weird because with the Eastwest colossus sampler I don't get any problems.
