Just another guy, really.
The guy is interested in a project motorcycle I am selling. He offered as partial trade a2002 Squire 20th Anniv. Strat, which has some rather bizarre mods to it: The plastic pickguard has been replaced with a copper (metal, not copper-colored) plate cut in the shape of the original guard, and the pickups are all crowded together- all three are spaced no wider than the original location of the neck and mid pups. There is NOTHING except copper and air where the bridge pup would be. He says the guitar sounds "fantastic," I am dubious. If I get/accept it, I will probably use it as a test mule for my "as many pups as will fit" project. (Perhaps I will call the resulting guitar a "Litter.") The headstock has been cut out (poorly and rough), with a circular hole at the very top and a french-curve triagular hole next to the tuners. Truly strange looking- frankly I wish the modder had left the headstock alone. He said a friend did the mods and they include Fender (not squire) pups, but he can't say WHAT Fender. If it really does sound even close to the praise he is giving it, maybe I will get lucky and get a set of Lace Sensors, or at the very least a Tex-Mex set. I guess my ohmmeter will tell that tale.
Whatever collector value this axe ever had is gone, daddy, GONE. I am thinking a replacement neck with the "correct" Squire 20th Anniv. spaghetti on it would cost way more than I'd ever get for the guitar. He's offering it as $100 twards the motorcycle; I don't think I'd ever pay $100 cash for this failed abortion, but as trade value for the bike, yeah, maybe.
Is there ANY collector value for a 7-year old Squire, butchered or not?
I imagine the copper guard adds considerable shielding- in my experience, aluminum foil shielding the entire cavity is more trouble than it is worth.
I can not imagine the strange pup location to have a positive effect on the tone. Opinions?
