Guess Who cover..........

No, it's not a quiz. :D

This is a cover of an old "Guess Who" tune. I don't know how many people would actually know his tune, considering they were a Canadian band, and this tune is about 35 years old. But it's always been one of my favorites by them.

This is the fastest I've ever done a tune. It took me about 3 hours to track everything. I ain't bragging because it's not that complex a tune. Just sayin'.....

I don´t know the band nor the song, but I honestly have to say:

This is the best recording/tone you got in the last months...
Comparing (sorry, I´m a dumb with all that comparisions...:D) with ,for example,Sunday Monkey (which is excellent), seems you changed the preamps and converters,... CLEAN!

And the tons sound /image is something unbelieveble! (3 mics?) :eek:.I´ve seen frieds recording drums in studios with 12 mics and...you know:p

Thanx alot, CIRO. I honestly didn't do a thing differently. 3 mics on the drums, etc....

Maybe I should record my tunes as quickly as I did this one. Since it's a cover, I didn't put anywhere near the amount of time into it as I do my originals. Maybe that's the trick. :D
 
I know the song and band very well. They have a ton of hits and this is one of them. Sounds great, nice job. How do you get your cymbals/hats to sound so "soft" or maybe "not so harsh" is a better term? You have a great drum sound........the rest of the instruments sound awsome as well.

As far as my cymbals/hats not sounding "harsh", I don't know. I set up my 2 AKG C1000's (which so many "experts" claim are very harsh :rolleyes: ) in a hybrid Glyn Johns/Recordman configuration and that's about it.

Those are the same mics I use but in a XY config. You wouldnt happen to have a pic of your hybrid setup would ya?
 
Wow, this realy sounds good to me I'm a relative noobie, I would like to know how you get the drums to sound so good with 3 mics? of coarse the rest of the song is also great!
 
You are one talented man, RAMI. Are you sure you are from Canada? I think there should be a law against any songs coming from people who live in Canada. I mean you guys already have the market on the geese and everything. Not to mention the bacon. Okay, I won't mention it.

I had this on 45RPM and played the shit out of it. Flip side was ?????

Some Trivia:
Along with "Bus Rider," this was a main song for a trio called Brother, who were made up of Kurt Winter, Bill Wallace and Vance Masters. All 3 members of Brother wrote the song, but when The Guess Who recorded it, lead singer Burton Cummings made sure Winter got the sole writing credit, since he was a member of The Guess Who. Wallace and Masters did receive financial compensation under this agreement. (thanks, Barry Kesten - Bellmore, United States)

I tried finding a pic, but couldn't, unfortunately.

The thing that makes it "hybrid" is simply that I put one mic about 36" above the snare (which is what both the Glyn and Recorderman set ups do), but the other mic, instead of going right over my shoulder (Recorderman) or out by the floor tom (Glyn), it goes about halfway between those 2 locations.

Thanx alot, James. And I'm flattered you chose ME for your first post here. :) :D

I don't have any "secret" for getting my drum sound. I record in a small room with 7' ceilings, but I have bass traps in every corner, I tune my drums as well as I can get them to sound, and I whack the hell out of them.

Interesting. I noticed the writer was "Winter", and I was wondering who that was.

My guess on the "B" side would be "Hang on to Your Life"?????

This wasn't a hit downunder though the GW & BTO has several between them.
RAMI - well done. Speed can be a help - some of the best recordings is the history of RnR were banged down (and covers too).
Nobody mentioned Due South - there's a classic series - my missus has watched all the dvds at least 8 times...of Dry Ginger Ale...or haven from the draft...or Cpt Cook's best work....or Mounties...or Dudley Dooright...or Silver Wolf or...London on Thames - oh, hang on there is another somewhere I think!

Guess Who is awesome, even if I only know a few songs of theirs (my favorite being that one medley with I think its called a "Its a New Mother Nature" but I probably got the title and the lyric wrong).

This is an amazing song, amazing performance. Great bass tones especially. Probably would have gone with a more classic overdrive for the rhythm guitar. Awesome.

You would more than likely know more songs if you heard them.....they are a - "oh, they did that song" kind of band. Alot of well known B-side tunes.

You are correct, the title is "New Mother Nature", they have awsome vox, as well as Kansas also has great vox. Speaking of which, I started doing a cover of "Dust In The Wind" but my guit player is having problems with the picking on that one so it is idle right now.:confused:
 
Wow, Duder! Incredible job! Drums sound great and guitars sound great. Your vocals are typical Rami, BUT... where did the guts and gravel come from?!?!?! A new addition to your talents! Loved the harmonies! Wish I knew your secret to getting those harmonies to sound as good as you do.

I loved "Hang On To Your Life" and have always wanted to do a cover of "Share The Land" but you SMOKED this one!!!!
 
Yeah I know this tune well. Sounds awesome dude. Vocals and drums sound great, and the guitars sound fantasticI I don't know if you did anything differently with them this time, but this is the guitar sound I was looking for from your last few efforts. Gritty and edgy but clear. Love it dude. Great job.
