WORDS OF WISDOM.
The original post was "What distortion pedal to buy for a solid state half stack?" posted by someone who is not the guitar player. No disrespect to the OP meant, but WTF?
No idea what sound the other guy wants. No idea what equipment he'll end up with. No idea how to even define the "best" pedal. Now it's turned into what amp to buy for the non-internet guitar player. Still no idea real idea what he wants to sound like, but at least we're talking about the amp instead of the pedal.
Again, I stress, no offense to the original poster, but this is like finding the sound of one hand clapping. GO TO THE GUITAR STORE AND CRANK THEM. Show up close to closing time - some places will be happy (happier) to let you rattle the windows after regular store hours are done. Take YOUR GUITAR to play.
My personal advice is that if you're going to spend $1000+ for an amp, and THEN buy a distortion pedal, you bought the wrong amp. Feel free to disagree with that idea.
Honestly, how this spawned a 3 page thread (which I mercifully did not read) is beyond me.

Yea i agree, im a peice of shit and shouldnt have let this spawn into 3 different subjects and all that haha
but that is how it started out, I thought we were set on that randall, so I wanted to what pedal (if any) could make it sound better (cause I thought thats what pedals did to a degree) then people started recomending different cabs/heads all that....and yes im not a guitar player, just a good friend that wants nothing but the best for my fellow musician friend who doesnt have a computer at his house.
and also I know some of you havent read all the posts but I did mention the music stores here have only a few amps to play on, and they are only mesas and kranks and hes already played them and really likes them, but obviously cant afford that. the closest good music store is I belice in charolette...samash i think.
BIGGEST THING!!!...yes I am sorry, I failed to mention what he is accustomed to playing....a peavey studio pro 112 combo, with a digitech death metal pedal...so obviously anything will be a huge improvement for him haha
yea, he wishes he had the money for the mesa because hes played on one and loces it, but for him $800 to $1300 is a just to much of a price difference, but if theres a used one that comes up ill be the first to let him know =]

since you did ask about a pedal, and dude plays metal, i'd recommend a TS-9 (tube screamer). using half the amps gain and half one the TS-9 will give him mega saturation and he can adjust to taste.

basically its that or the carvin v3, if he cant 'buy it

pros-winds of plague uses it, and sounds sicknasty live, its all tube power, and just looks sweet
cons-$850 is up there, will it sound like $850
line 6 hd100
pros-good reviews from what ive read, $700 from ebay "new", pod 2.0 recording output seems nice, cool looks, many effects and stuff
cons-wonder if it sounds as digital as other line 6 models, is the tone as good as the carvin

before deciding, the offer stills stands to come by and check out some of my amps, specifically the 5150. I think you'll find the Line-6 will pale in comparison for shear kick-ass tone.

hey, no problem bro. i've missed the guitar forum here. i'm glad i dropped in.
i haven't heard these amps, but heard of them. though it would sound good, i still worry about Line6 quality. i've jammed with a guy that uses one of their high dollar combos and that thing sounded sweet though. just something to keep in mind.
actually, it sounds like 2 grand. if this amp were sold retail, it would go for WAY more than 850. keep in mind, it's only for the head. a half stack will go for just under 1500 and that sounds like it's out of your guys price range. if he's willing to take out a loan or whatever, it's well worth the money.
i'm not gonna bullshit you though, the tone stack on that amp is pretty complicated. it takes some people a while to dial in their tone and some have gotten frustrated and got rid of it before spending enough time with it to ffind that tone. it took me a while but now i know what i've got...sheer brutality. this thing is a metal machine.
deciding between the two, i'd definitely pick the carvin. effects are a huge plus to some players.
yes, the 5150. that's a badass amp and certainly one to consider. i've played thru one and can vouch for its badness.
i'd certainly choose the carvin over the line-6 but would give the 5150 a chance.

I wasn't saying anybody was a bad person. I just think the original question was a little too mysterious to be properly answered.
And in case the "people who don't read this thread and say that everyone's giving bad advice" comment was aimed at me, I'm not saying that either. The advice (that I've read) all seems to be good - try out the amps and get a quality amp that you like. I'm certainly not saying that's bad advice.
The only partially negative thing I'm saying is that it's a little surprising that this thread is now 4 pages long. But sure, we love talking about gear, so there ya go.
But all the talk in the world cannot replace 15 minutes comparing two amps in person.
If you don't have a guitar store nearby, consider making a road trip. It sounds like this is going to be a major purchase for the guitar player, and the consequences of making a poor choice are pretty high. Spend the time/effort/money to test them out in person. It'll be a much better investment than spending $1500 on a half stack that ends up on craigslist at a loss and repeating this process.

nah, it's all good man. i thought that was good advice when posted and still do.
i don't normally buy anything without plugging into it first but that's not an option with carvin. still, even though it could be a pain in the ass, the 10 day return policy helps keep one from getting stuck with something they're not happy with.
you're right. everything else mentioned could be tested in a music store and a road trip would be well worth the effort. the recommendations mentioned here are a good starting point though.
