Ok, so I have a Line 6 Toneport UX1 which came bundled with Ableton Live 4 Lite Line 6 Edition (or sumthin like that) and have been recording my 3 piece band with this and it has been ok for now (look up The Red Voyagers on myspace if u want a listen) however one of the big disadvantages with the Toneport has been that I can only use one mic and one instrument at a time and so far I have been recording drums with one mic (i know this is really bad!). I have also just discovered the magic that is Reaper and am in awe of it so far.

So what I really want to know is, what can i get as a replacement for the Toneport that has more inputs??

Any help would be great

You need to look at firewire interfaces, especially if you're recording drums. :)

i hate to be a newbie again but what's a firewire interface?

Seriously????

Okay, but in regards to audio use... fair question. There are three main routes for bringing digital audio into your computer; PCI (or PCIe nowadays), USB or Firewire.

In particular, USB and firewire have become more popular. They both have similar speeds, but with Firewire data transfer is managed by the interface and with USB, data transfer is managed by the cpu. So, with USB, data flow stops while the cpu has to run off and do other tasks. With firewire, the data will keep flowing regardless of what the cpu is doing. For large amounts of data, like an audio stream, the firwire interface performs better. Much better. USB is good for about 4 channels of audio and firewire can handle up to 16(?)... more(?)... i'm not sure how many more, but it does a lot.

hope that helps....
