I haven't been to this thread for about a month. What have I missed?

(I'll bet not much.)

+1

Actually, it's a very good idea to compile information elsewhere than this thread. This thread has grown extremely difficult to find information because of its size.

We moderators have discussed management of this thread, and when shipping of this round is complete, future transactional communications will need to take place on Free Ads. This transition will be done in an orderly fashion with lots of time before anything actually happens, but please keep this in mind--we already have several good threads that have been started on using the mics, the pres, mods/repairs on the DIY board, and so forth. That structure is much easier to use to locate information and keep discussions on each board relevant.

This BBS should not be considered a board of official record for the group buy, for the simple reason that we (mods included) are at the mercy of the board owners. Therefore, I would encourage the group buy organizers to develop that facility at a location they can control.

I can also categorically state that threads pertaining to the group buy, or any other manufacturer or brand, will not be made stickies. My philosophy on stickies--which I believe is shared by the other mods--is that they should be few and generally relevant to all types of gear or topics within the content of each board. We already have relevant stickies on the Mic board to cover any sort of technical topic or application of microphones, so I would not anticipate any more stickies created here.

Great post...and great advice (imo).

I 100% agree. I also think that to make stickies would be to be seen to 'legitimise' this operation at a time when lots of people are wondering who to blame for its outcomes. Chance's business and this forum are not connected and it would be unfair to give the impression that Audiofanzine or other management here were 'officially supporting' the purchase of these products.

I actually think that if Chance were to set up his own sales site, with definitive information rather than forum hearsay, it would be a lot clearer to potential buyers exactly what they were able to expect for their money in terms of quality, service etc, and perhaps then expectations would be appropriately managed, avoiding some of the disappointment expressed in this thread.

Finally, I really do hope that everyone gets parts replaced or repaired, or whatever is needed to feel they have gotten what they paid for. It's good that forums like this can provide a discussion point for some of the guys who are trying to figure out how to make these things usable.

As far as I know, we've yet to see replacement ribbons for the first round group buy mics. My question is: What recourse do those have, who bought first round ribbon mics sold by those who participated in that group buy who have saggy or ripped ribbons? I know I bought my first round mics off of someone on this forum, but I'll be damned if I remember who it was. :o

Any ideas, thoughts, suggestions?

I think this is an interesting and pertinent question, one that makes me a little twitchy. A group buy thread is one thing; a group lawsuit thread is quite another. I would suggest to anyone in the situation you describe that they should contact Chance through any route possible immediately and try to find a satisfactory solution through that route if at all possible.

I think you are SOL. If I read you correctly, you bought the mic from someone else who got it in the group buy, so the group buy organizers have no obligation to you, only possibly to the person who sold it to you. So if the person who sold it to you gets a replacement ribbon, it would be nice if he passed it on to you, but if he sold it to you "as is" he has no legal obligation, and Chance even less obligation.

I made a TnC audio forum dedicated only to TnC products.
It hasn't been used yet, but it exists. Maybe we should start compiling all info there?

Chance and Terry checked it out and thinks it's cool.

Agreed. I you weren't an original purchaser, I don't believe that TNC has any obligation to you. However, Chance is a nice guy, so you might get lucky if you ask nicely.

I guess maybe I should have been just a little more specific. I understand that because I wasn't the original purchaser of said mic that they have no obligation to me and my saggy ribbon. I just want to fix the thing and use it. If I have to purchase a replacement, so-be-it.

Hopefully, once all the shipping is finished, Chance can turn his attention to the various equipment issues, including sagging ribbons. I recollect that a bunch of replacement ribbons were to be sent. It would be good if they were made available to anyone who needs one, original purchaser or not.

I am working on a new song in my modest home studio, and the ACM-310 through the ACMP-84 with EQ on acoustic guitar is pretty nice, so all the news is not bad. I am happy to be a part of the "family" of the Group Buy, happy that my gear is working so well, and looking forward to the next Group Buy.

I *love* the ACMP-73 for DI guitar and bass!

I like almost all of the mics, too. I think I'm really going to like the ACM-900 when I've figured out the best ways to use it.

There's been some activity here http://www.prodigy-pro.com/diy/index.php?topic=27791.0 in the last few weeks regarding fixes for the pres. I've pretty much got my 81 and 73 in a usable state.

For those waiting for a more elegant fix, it looks like a former design engineer for Jensen is looking into making a substitute power transformer that may obviate most of the hum problems, just leaving the transistor swap and a gain switch modification to be done. Hopefully he'll get some units from chance to work on.

has anyone tried to see if dragon(or whatever other responsible party) is willing to create a group buy section of the forum? it seems to me like that would be the easiest way to compile all the GB related material...

It has been discussed behind the scenes with the management, yes. There are lots of good reasons why that isn't going to happen.

.....And if said fix involves a Jenson transformer, the cost will be as much as the unit went for. In the end, it is likely that we will learn why a good pre-amp costs $1000+. This will probably be a good thing as first hand experience tends to go a long way.

Pretty much sums up my feelings about the group buy experience.

I'm not a xenophobe, or a protectionist, or obsessed with Tibet, but just from the point of view of quality control and business
Practices, I think i'm over buying chinese stuff.

Maybe kits are a better compromise solution for people who dont have $1000 to spend on a preamp.
