someone over at groupdiy came up with a pretty simple mod to fix the popping on the switch by making that position an actual "off" position.

Thanks. I couldn't post that link as this forum won't let me post URLs until you have 5 posts under your belt.

ATTTN CHANCE - re: TOO MANY TRACKING NUMBERS?

Hey Chance (in case you're checking in here)

Last night I received 8 USPS click-n-ship tracking numbers. Is each mic and pre I bought going to be arriving in its own little box? :)

Just a heads-up,
Jon M

I gather the switch is make before break, but that's just a guess, and somehow that screws with the output transistor bias.

I don't think any other parts are likely to fail there; the output transistor should be plenty robust, and the series resistor supplying the output stage is smaller value (12R?) and 1W.

Yeah thats my guess too. My other guess is tat there's DC running through the switch. So it can't be a break before make or you would have a pop between every position.

This is probably why the original has the off positions at the position the ACMP's have pops.

Thanks for the heads up. This is the 4th time USPS has done this to me. They also charge me double. You should only have 4 labels. Now (again) I have to wait 10 days for a refund

Thanks MS. Was it determined that 7R8 should be replaced with a 2w resistor or not? There was talk on PSW about adding an OFF in that position on the gain pot if that's the cause.

:D

I suppose with the off position, it should fix the problem with that 7R8, but somebody should measure and check. Either way, the fix involves replacing one or a few resistors.

Out of idle curiousity, has anyone compared their actual shipping cost to the the USPS online calculator?

I've lost count of how many parcels I've had posted from the US, but I've nearly always checked the shipping costs with the USPS online thingy and rarely noticed sufficient difference to cause me concern........................until now!!! No matter which way I enter estimated dimensions or weight (which is a known factor), the USPS facility indicates the possibility of some serious over-charging, at least for o/seas destinations.

For o/seas guys buying pres, this possibilty, dumped on top of the fact that the justifiable frustrations o/seas guys are already feeling are unlikely to be reduced by the GB organisers......eg: there's sweet fuck all possibility that any warranty (if it really exists), will be of any use to GB'ers outside the US.........would just be the icing on the cake:rolleyes:.

The postage fees are printed on each USPS label. Remember too that shipping to the port of LA, dock fees, duty etc. were all paid up front by everyone as part of the purchase. After that we had to pay for (2) 18 wheeler trucks to deliver from LA to Riverside, then come back to pick up the empty's, plus container charges. The people doing the packing are handicapped and are paid by the state and are not charging us. Then there are the packing materials such as boxes and foam packing. This is all divided up on a percentage of what each person ordered.

On another note I was just processing more USPS labels and they would not go through! For some reason USPS has charged me twice for everything I did all weekend! I am now over $1K over drawn. I have a seperate account for this and when payment is received for shipping, it goes out as a USPS payment and should balance out.

On still another note, someone from Australia is considering taking on receiving their orders directly from China. When I get more info, we can kick this around. I'm not sure if I posted this here, but last week I invoiced someone in AUS over $1000.00 just for shipping from here to there. If his order came direct from China, he would have saved that 1K (and saved me this USPS nightmare)

Only the first one ;) I think he was measuring VAC though . . . crazydoc?
It's 33vdc - it's after the rectifier, measured on the leads of the caps.
The voltage is 33v give or take 0.2v at the rectifier output (regulator input - measured on C9 and C14) of each 24v supply. The ripple is a sawtooth 120 Hz of o.2v on C9 and 0.1v on C14. Output ripple is an unmeasurable <1mv on each.

But didn't you say the 81 used all 25V caps
in the 24v power supplies

c9 and c14 (4700uF/35v)

are the only electrolytics seeing 33v

i agree that's cutting it too close

but hopefully at reasonable temperatures

they will be adequate

there are some electrolytics

on the other boards

rated at 25v (possibly seeing up to 24v)

- that's cutting it even closer

i'd agree these are

very poorly designed

to last very long

(or even work out of the box :))

Soooo.....

For those of us who are total idiots as far as electronic components go - what is the final word here on the 73's (and other units) with regard to component power handling, longevity, etc.?

The last 5-6 posts have lost me completely.

Jay

I'm holding off dong anything until the experimenting is done, there's a consensus, and someone puts together a mod "howto" for us that aren't that adapt.

Yea. How about some sort of official declaration/tutorial of TnC approved repairs/mods? The information is so scattered at this point, and all this technical information goes over most of our heads. Sure, those of us who can solder and are capable of replacing circuit board components are interested in what the fix is, but most of us don't understand the theory. So pretty much the last few dozen posts are useless to us.

So all you guys doing all the testing and postulating: Don't stop, but maybe try to help out those with less technical knowledge and break it down for us more concisely.

there aren't any good

or even adquate fixes yet

but there are two things

that will definitely be

in the ultimate list of fixes

1) rotate the power transformer

2) swap out the q4 and q5 transistors

on the eq boards

read this thread for more detail:

i'm sure at some point

it will all be put into

a more cogent/cookbook form

but there's still a ways to go

That's why I'm patiently waiting. :D What I have is working for what I need it too. but modding is definitely in the plans.
