mine arrived today...2 73's and 1 84. 1 6802, 1 ACM3 and 1 1200....I expected a dent in the 1200 like all the others that I saw but lucky me.....NO DENT!!!!

everything looks to be in perfect shape....

I did...

Jay, glad to hear everything showed up OK. And while you were home!!! :D:D How did you arrange that?!?!? LOL

Hey, I sent you a PM.....

bp

burn in the 310's as well as passed signal through them and the ACM-3's.

Impressions:

ACM-3's - very, very smooth...I really like this microphone a lot. Can't believe we were able to acquire these at this price point.

ACM-310's - Not sure how to describe it - very classy sounding to me and should excel in a number of applications. I burned them in for about 8 hours...given the tubes in this mic, that's good enough for me. There's a touch of midrange warmth in these microphones that I really appreciate (at least on the vocal stuff I tried them out with) that I'm sure is due to a bit of distortion given the tube circuit. Again, a STEAL of a deal on this mic as well.

I used Onyx pres to test the microphones (800r ADAT through the Fireface 800 into Reaper). Good stuff.

Just wanted to chime in with this...the microphones are certainly impressing me at first blush...later this Spring, I'll really wring them out.

Take care,
Jay

I cant help but wonder what could have caused all the dents...after seeing a couple of pix, I thought maybe it was supposed to be like that for some strange reason....but I noticed that some were worse than others....has anyone else recieved 1200's with no dented grills??? maybe there is something wrong with MINE!!!

Hey thajeremy,

None of my 1200's have any dents at all. After I saw those posts I went back and checked mine to make sure and they are fine.

Next Group Buy

Anyone have any info on the next group buy? Im so buzzkilled I missed the last one. I would love some great deals on pre's comps and mics! I understand the risks but I'm ready!

Thanks for the impressions, Jay. My gear should be here today, (73, 310, 900). I'm really wanting to hear the 310 on acoustic guitar.

Be safe when you go back over there.

I'm guessing that the dent is a tuning method of some sort. Apparently yours didn't need to be tuned. LOL

There have been vague indications that there will be another GB but other than that, not much info.

:D

I'm pretty sure I know what caused the dents on the 1200's. If you take the body off, and then prepare to put it back on, your hand naturally grips the upper part of the grill with a finger right on top... fits the dent perfectly. Our dear mic assembly expert then pushed hard from the top to get the body to seat around the switches and grill, before screwing the base on. If you take an extra few seconds, then you can just gently wiggle it up into place, but our technician seems to have lacked such patience. This would also explain why many of the 1200s have roll-off and pad switches that bind. Cram that body up against them and they won't move easily at all. Gently put it in place and snug it down and no problem.

I'm sure that for all but the worst dents, just taking the grill off and gently pushing it out from the inside will clean it up just fine. I'm going to pull the inner mesh out of mine anyway.

Thanks. I just got an email from FedEx informing me that my package has been delivered (it showed up 5 minutes ago :D). Well, at least they follow through. I hope to try everything out this weekend.

Hey guys
I have been INSANELY busy lately. It's not taking much away from the shipping process. I just received a payment for shipping in the amount $230.11, and there was NOT the usual name, just a number. This number is not associated with anything in our database. When I have time (?) I'll research who this is that paid. In the mean time, back to calculating and invoicing.

After a 24-hour burn-in, I just ran some vocals and guitar (resonator) through my three 1200's and the ACMP-73. Two of the mics sound very similar, and one is noticably warmer in the mids. The pre, sadly, has the dreaded mid-range hum. For me, the midrange eq is basically unusable for addition, but works fine for subtraction. Everything else is dead quiet and very nice.

I'm happy, overall, and will be looking into a fix for the ACMP-73.

Peace out, and Happy New Year, folks!!!

Greetings all.

FedEx showed up on the 30th bearing gift of two ACMP-73 pres. Just today have had a chance to work with them.

First off, I have the crazy popping sound on the mic input that has been reported. However I am not hearing the buzzing/humming in the EQ section. I don't have golden ears, but cranking everything and running through all the postions yielded hightened computer noise via the microphone, but nothing from the pres that I could detect.

So far I have done a quick scratch vocal track and DI'ed my acoustic both with the EQ enagaged

Vocally I really liked the richness that the pre gave to my voice, but it was fairly dark. However, I have a fairly dark sounding voice, so there is no surprise there.

Ran my Breedlove AC25/SM through the DI with the EQ and HOLY CRAP it sounded GOOD. I was really impressed at the sound. very rich tone and smooth top end. I would have left it in the final mix if my timing hadn't sucked so bad when I was playing.

For my limited experience recording, I have to say these are a great addition to my insignificant rig. I am really looking forward to recording electric guitar through these with my ACM-2 mic from the last group buy. Well worth the wait IMHO.

Chance. Thank you so much for all the work you put into this.

used the 73 on vocals and its got a nice color to it. very happy~. does the acm 2 come with a clip. i didnt get one.

ACMP-73 - What a joke!

Just listened to my two ACMP-73 preamps - input shorted to ground and EQ bypassed. Totally unacceptable hum and buzz.

At "normal" gain settings (say, 55dB of gain) The hum and buzz is about 30dB above the broadband noise floor. I don't know about you, but when I listen to a piece of gear I want to hear a nice clean, broadband noise floor with no 60Hz, 120Hz, 180Hz etc hum and buzz standing out against the noise floor.

These things are totally unusable in my book. There are obviously some serious ground loop issue between signal and power ground in these units. I don't for a minute believe the two I've got are unusual.

Let's see, I'll just summarize my experience with TnC - $350 upfront payment, $35 shipping charge, 7+ months from order to receipt of goods...then I'm left with 30lb of doorstops with knobs on them.

What do y'all think?

I think it was known upfront the group buy is somewhat of a roll of the dice. My 84 is pretty nice sounding. It's got a different flavor than my other pres. It will work on some things. Not on others. I honestly wasn't expecting much from these. I think we will start seeing mods to improve the preamps. I'm loving my ACM-3 on elec gtr. I'll probably go for the trafo upgrade. I can see the 6802's maybe sounding nice as drum overhead or stereo room. The 1200 sounds good on my ac gtr. For what I spent, I'm happy. I think you just need to remember there were no "guarantees".

Really. I'm speaking here as an end user and not as a business owner (that will come later).

But man, did no one actually listen to these things before the design was finalized? These things sound like 40 year old tube equipment with bad rectifiers and leaky filter caps! Hummbzzzzzz... They sound like a home brew project before all the grounding issues are tracked down and worked out.

As a business owner I'm simply astonished.

I'm astonished that I've been delivered such a poor experience - 7 months of waiting, $400 tied up, unusable gear and no accountability.

...My 84 is pretty nice sounding... I think you just need to remember there were no "guarantees".

ah, have you really listened to the noise floor? Is the hum and buzz down at the level of the background white / pink noise or maybe just a few dB above?

re: "guarantees" - I can understand subjective impressions may vary and a positive subjective impression can't be guaranteed. But to deliver units with obvious ground loop problems that render them unusable by any professional standard?

Really. For $190 a buyer can go to Musician's Friend and get an EH 12AY7 pre - a true high voltage tube preamp univerally loved for its punchy 3D sound - and get it into the studio in three days with free shipping and a 45 day satisfaction guarantee.
