Mixer or Audio Interface?

I wouldn’t generally bother with a mixer for computer recording in a home studio except maybe a small mixer for monitoring/routing purposes.

I don’t really understand why you’re asking the question because the two things have different purposes (although you can get some of the same features in both). If you get a mixer instead of an interface then what exactly are you going to be recording to?

Perhaps you could expand a bit on your situation, how you’re intending to do things and precisely what your needs are (and your budget)?

I think he was implying do you mix out of or in the box. Of course you still need an interface to record using a mixer, but you can route your signals around so all your mixing is done on the mixer. However, the cost of a mixer with good routing and pres tends to cost a bit more than an interface with similar options. But then again, if you get a control surface you're probably gonna be running at about the same.

With todays great firewire interfaces and great plugins theres no reason for a hobby home recordist to go with a mixer...(unless you can afford it! And by that I mean Toft consoles etc., not cheap live boards).

Get a good preamp or two, and good convertors, your set.

Would people use a mic preamp say with a audio interface such as the Tascam US-122L or similar products, or just stick with the preamps provided in the device?

I am using the Tascam US1641 and really see no need for external mic preamp at this point.
