Great song, Strat. Many layers of texture and emotion that hold your interest all the way through. Not a lot of 6 and half minute songs can do that.

Great playing as usual. The composition is complex. Are the drums real? The cymbals sound like it. Don't care for the flute patch, but all the others are pretty good. What library are you using? I liked the agitato cello and David didn't particularly slam it. That tells you something. Very fine work. I usually don't like so much verb on a lead git, but you somehow make it sound like it belongs there. The dissonant chords right before the distorted lead is a nice touch. I'd say someone could make the argument that you are a musical genius.

The stop at 6.07 could be wetter I just had an expectation when it was hanging that it might have a faint repeat to suggest the space or something.

Thanks Ray--I really appreciate your time and input. I hear the stop you're talking about--It's so short, I never thought about it being dry causing a problem; but you're right, a slight trail might help there.

Thanks Greg. I had a lot of trouble with the kick--it was always either too much or too little. Does it have a better thump to your ears now? (I nudged it right where you said to--man that was the spot!)

Yes it's much better. A subtle hint of attack with some meat behind it. I think the kicks sound is good. If anything, it could be just a touch louder.

Seem to be a few artifacts or something from that.:confused: I would back it off myself but it's working OK.

The patch is fine. The lick at 2"50 isnt exactly a "cello lick", it wouldnt work on a cello but it doesnt matter.

I see you have put more dynamics in here. The uberfast piano and cello licks are a bit buried. Good.:D:D:D The less prominent the better, the "midiness" doesnt stick out as much now.

Well done, your additional mixing has paid off.:)

Wig--Thanks for the kind words. Yeah, the drums are real--numerous stereo loops of variations at the same tempo with the same kit. I then created separate tracks with samples of cymbals, and another for the kick--gives me more flexiblity. It takes a ton of editing to get something that complex out of loops, but in the end it sounds better to me. (Like you said--sounds like real drums. :))

So tell me what would make the flute sample sound more convincing? (BTW--all the "orchestra" samples--piano too--are from Sample Tank 2. Some from the starter kit--some from expansion packs.)

Thanks for listening again David. I was afraid you might--since I didn't do your suggestion justice vis a vis the classical interlude section. I was getting burnt and didn't have the mental energy to write and program the percussion you suggested, so I just focused on getting the most out of what was there.

I think I hear the artifacts you're talking about. Some tails aren't tapering as smoothly as they should, and there's a bit of extra sizzle on the heavy parts. I'll listen in my car/at my desk for a couple days and see about backing off the final comp/limiting.

I realy like the drumming and the classical stuff is nice its alot better than the first mix
 
I've been meaning to post for several days now, but can't seem to get enough listening time of this piece...finding myself wondering, once again, how someone with such ability to compose and arrange...and to actually play, many of the instruments used, can NOT be well known for their music. I, myself, don't have a problem hearing all of those sounds...all of the instruments..but...when it comes time to play or put it all together, I am lost...so of course, I am amazed and intrigued by someone so gifted. I am not trying to take away from anyone else on this board nor blowing smoke up anyone's butt. There are many here gifted as well...y'all know who ya are and I've not been bashful to say so, when excited by what y'all have done musically. I am humbled to be in the presence of the gifted musicians around this place, with their own style and way of doing things. I am soooo glad, you all don't sound alike..that would be boring as hell. That being said...



The addition of the gong to the intro kicks ass. This song fulfills audio and visual pleasure ...the excitement of texture and tone and rhythms and melody...all coming together, creating a cornucopia of sound, seeding one's imagination, if they just close their eyes and let the music narrate a tale ...your piece would also be excellent for a ballet... turning into a juke joint Hoe down...:eek::D...really, it would be a wonderful song combined with dance, to lead the listener visually where you would like them to go with it.

I am torn betwixt the mystic gong intro, the soul grasping lead axe solos and the ingenius bass/axe outro...which puts me in mind of Jim Carey and Cameron Diaz in The Mask at the club dancing...that is just some hot playing Strat!

You have done such a great job with the mixing and production end of the song too~

The piano, sythn and strings are intemedietly and sometimes intertwined to bring one in closer to the edge... The flute embraces. The drums hold it together and the cymbals give it sparkle. The bass lets it all nestle inside, 'till it decides to let loose and blow em all away! The lead guitar is what takes hold of my heart though...always has...always will.

I had posted you are a songwriting genius ...you are...but when Xeries said it could be argued that you are a musical genius...well, I say, aye aye...there is NO argument here...for you are a musical genius...and yes...I've got experience with one of those fellas...one of my sons...he composes and is a genius at it...but I just can't seem to get him to do anything with it...it saddens me...for such talent to go untapped. I am so happy that you are using your wonderful gift Strat!!!


I know you said, you were going to put this one to bed...but at my house, it has just seen the sunrise...

This is an awesome song Strat!...some may disagree, but I believe it to be a musical masterpiece...but not a finale, only the beginning of them.

Thanks man! After listening to it over and over for a week, I've tweaked it a few more times--tightening things up even more. I didn't post it here for fear of beating a dead horse. But since you revived this thread, I'll post the FINAL FINAL (really this time!) if anyone wants to hear it...
 
Okay, this is just to keep the record current. (I don't wish to presume anyone's dying for this, but in case anyone asks, I just want to be sure the last one posted is really the final).

Here's the final. I think it's a tighter, much punchier mix (the others were really harsh in comparison. :eek:) Backed off the limiter and tamed a bunch of "sizzle." I tweaked a bunch of details in some parts and added some layers for texture to others...

 
Great sounding recording...I like the epic feel at the beginning of the song which sounds like a movie background music track.

How did you get that epic sound with violins and all of that in the song...It sounds like real instruments or did you use midi and plugins.

The piano sounds excellent.

I like the guitar playing.

The lead is played very cleanly and overall It sounds pretty good riff wise.

Pretty decent instrumental song.
