I am a novice in terms of recording vocals, my question is in two parts.
1: I can't figure out how to integrate my 4 systems. I have: a Shure KSM32 microphone, A lexicon omega pre-amp, a lexicon mpx 100 dual ch. processor, and an Alesis 3630 compressor.

I record vocals ONLY, into Cool Edit pro 2.0 on my computer. I'd like to set it up so that I can adjust a "real-time"
reverb and compression w/my external components, and record into my internal program. I cannot figure out the manual, and can't get it to work.

2:Once, and if, you can explain how to hook it all up, please explain (in lamens terms) how to work each knob of the mpx-100 in accordance w/the omega pre-amp. The books speak as though I'm already "in the know" about many terminologies, and I'm simply a novice. I sincerely appreciate any support that can be given.

Thanks,

I doubt there's a way to incorporate external hardware to use at mixdown with that interface. If you want to use them while tracking (not advisable) then you could use the inserts.

I don't know why you'd want to do it anyway when you consider that there are free software plug-ins that will do as good, if not a better job than the hardware processors you have.

I agree with Kevin... you should record without effects and use plugins after-the-fact to make any sonic adjustments... but in answer to your question...
Connect Line Out to Line In to the following devices in this order
  1. Shure KSM32 microphone
  2. Lexicon omega pre-amp
  3. Alesis 3630 compressor
  4. Lexicon MPX 100
  5. Computer Sound Card
You'll want to put the MPX last in the chain and use the stereo outputs to your computer

the reason i want the effect real time is so that i can "hear" what's the perfect reverb for the specific instrumental.....b/c with cool-edit pro i can only test the reverbs with the vocal alone, and not adjust it along with the instrumental playing, in real time. does that make sense?

I'd like a way to hear my vocal, as it's being adjusted, all the while having the instrumental be playing so i can match it perfect.

any help is greatly appreciated.

also, if there are free programs available, where would be great help. Thanks guys!~

I mean, I don't necessarily need to record it with the effect on it, real time, but if I can somehow "hear" the reverb adjustments as I'm making them while everything is playing together, if anyone can school me on that it would be exactly what I need.

No :D

I don't use CEP but am surprised that you're not able to add verbs to all or any tracks and just play around with them to your heart's content.

Here you go:

If you type free plugins into the search you'll get loads of threads.

you can add them to all or any tracks, but all i know how to do is grab one at a time, in edit view, to add the reverb......then go back to multi-track view and "hear" if i guessed right.

I'd like to be adjusting my vocal reverb WHILE HEARING the beat, if that makes sense.

Yeah I understand what you want to do. What I don't get is why it isn't very straightforward (or even possible) in CEP.

Don't you just hit play and have all the tracks play back at once (with the ability to add and adjust individual plugs while doing so)?

Never used it so can't really help I'm afraid.

Well, hopefully this will work real-time, and then I don't need to record a dry vocal anyways:

To use the MPX100 and 3630 with the Omega you will need an insert cable. An insert cable has 3 connectors. One of the connectors has 3 contact points, this type of connector is called tip-ring-sleeve (TRS). The other two connectors have only two contact points, these are called tip-sleeve (TS).

To use your outboard gear with the Omega you will need to make the following connections:

Shure KSM32 > Omega Mic 1 input

TRS of insert cable > Omega Insert 1

TS of insert cable labeld ‘Tip’ > Alesis 3630 input

Alesis 3630 output > Lexicon MPX100 input

Lexicon MPX100 output > TS of insert cable labeled ‘Ring’

After you have made these connections make sure that none of the inputs are clipping on any of the units. To check this, start with the Omega; when you speak or sing at your loudest level the peak led should not turn on. If it does you will need to turn the Mic 1 knob down. After the input level on the Omega is set, adjust the 3630’s input, then the MPX100’s input so none of the clip or peak lights turn on.

Each of the knobs on the MPX100 control different parameters. The best descriptions can be found on page 2 of the user guide: http://www.lexiconpro.com/Product_Downloads/mpx 100/MPX100_User_Guide_Eng_Rev0.pdf.
