Trailing Behind Again
I was waiting for another member to supply a vocal, but he has been busy with his own life, so it's me singing it.

Anfontan did all the acoustic instruments with the exception of the two acoustic guits that open the intro. I have a rock ballad with dobro, mandolin and congas in it!

The drums are the great BentRabbit, everyone's drummer on call, and he was spot on for this one. I washed the drums quite a bit because I wanted a subdued sound to them with lots of shimmering cymbals, but other than that, it's a straight forward mix. Let me know what you think:

With You Tonight
Second song down in this list.

I'm kind of biased here-but I think your mix sounds very good on this song.;) Hopefully some more comments will be coming soon~

very nice Eddie:)
Considering the subject of the lyrics, I think it was best to sing it yourself;) Really nice guitar work and the guys did a good job for you.

Cheers
Joe

It was just Anfontan, and yes, his guitar work is most excellent. Thanks for the listen, Joe.

Hello,
I love your song. I really do.
The mix has big potential and there is still space for improvment. I'm really not good in explaining what to do with different frequences bla, bla, etc... but I am sure it's something about tweaking here and there on EQ and PAN glider. I really hope someone will come with those suggestions.
Please contact me (pp) after any revision of the song. I really love it and I would like to follow it all the way up.
In the meantime, I would like to know everything about your recording rig for acoustic guitars.

I won't be able to do much with your explanation because I am not hearing anything to me that is out of whack. But perhaps someone else can hear it like you said and would be kind enough to post.

As far as my chain goes, it's basic. Most of the acoustic instruments on this track were done by Anfontan, so maybe he will share what he does. My chain is simple: Audia Technica mic into Yamaha MG10/2 mixer to MR-8.

Thanks for the listen.

nice song! I want to hear more bass in the mix.

Another reminder that I desperately need to lay one out for Mrs. Chef.

Then write one and put a lot of bass in it! :p

Actually, I had the bass up a dB or two higher initially, and it was overtaking the song. I think I need to look at how I eq'd the little darlin' and readjust it.

Thanks for the listen.

For my parts I used a matched set of MSH-2 condensor mics for both my Guitar (Martin D-16GT) and Mandolin (Washburn M-3SW). The signal then goes into a Mackie 1202 mixer (EQ is set flat) then to a PCI EMU 0404 soundcard in an AMD Athlon PC. I didn't do any processing other than normalizing for a consistant signal strength. Any other processing was done by Eddie aka Rokket.

Guitar work is indeed excellent. Nice song, a real mellow sweet feel. Lyrics are very nice, i'm sure someones thrilled with this song. Drumming is also very good. Vocals sound very sincere. I really like it. I'm a fan. Thanks for the listen man. Wish i had some advice to offer but everything sounds clear to me.

Take care

Gary

Nice goin' rokket! Sounds pretty together especially for a colab.

I am on pc speakers w/ sub, so perhaps not in a position to make mix suggestions, but I found the congas at the beginning to be far too loud and a little dead sounding. I might've preferred to have them suppressed altogether until the vox started, but that may just be taste thing.

Once the drums kicked in, it took on a whole new life. Guitars sound cool. Bass sounds great. Cybals seemed a bit too pronounced to me.

Vocal processing is cool. Did you double the vox throughout or just the chorus? I thought the vox worked better pitch-wise during the verses than the chorus, but pretty decent throughout.

Overall, a very nice song, a great arrangement and lots of nice contributions from the others :D.

Nice little Friday night listen. Great job on the stringed instruments Anfontan. I like the shimmery cymbals. My ears are toast today, so I can't offer any mix suggestions, just gave me the chance to enjoy it. Good job Eddie and all.

Thanks for the kind words and the listen!

I wanted the drums to sound subdued but the cymbals to be a bit pronounced like that. I will back it off and see what it sounds like then.
As far as the congas, yeah, probably a bit too loud, but I got weird artifacts when I added the verb, so I backed it off too. I am thinking maybe putting a bit of delay on and see what that does.
The lead vocal is double tracked throughout the whole song. I think I was recovering from a head cold when I tracked this; not to give excuses, but that may be why the backing tracks are pitchy. I may give them a dose of ReaTune and see what happens. I won't be able to retrack them for quite awhile, so I hope that fixes it.
Thanks for the listen!

Thank you, Rob! Come back when your ears rest and let me have it.

I won't be updating this mix. I had a laptop issue and had to delete the session... :(

If I posted again, it would probably sound waaaay different, so I guess I will either have to live with it, or do an A/B with the wave file until it gets done.

3 weeks of work down the tubes...

Bummer! Sorry to hear of your laptop issue.

So when you mix on a pc, you can store all the settings and just come back and pick up where you left off next time? Does it even remember automated fader settings, fx and all that?

Man, that would be cool...every time I get advice on a mix I have to reinvent the wheel if I want to update it.

I am using Reaper, and it creates a file that stores all the settings and peaks for each track. As long as the session folder is untouched, I can go back in a year later and it's all there. As far as the laptop issue, it was actually a problem with the external drive I was storing my files on. I am not really sure what happened. All of a sudden I couldn't access it, and when I did, that file and the one I was working on for Nicole's mix contest were gone. :(

Great tune, Rokket! I love the collabs myself, for sure. If I had a critique, it would be to say that I believe that the vocal would sound better without the chorus effect on it. I think a more organic sound to the voice would be awesome, indeed. This is entirely subjective, of course. But I think your voice sounds great, and covering it up with the effect lessens the beauty of it.

YES!! This is entirely the reason I mix completely in the box!!

Peace!!!

Thanks for the listen. If I do mix it again, I'll keep that in mind.

Hey Rokket, when I looked this morning this song was at #15 in the Guitar Rock charts, looks like it's getting some attention out there!
