Something or Nothing: Revisited

btw, i do all my guitars direct with the podxt live. took me awhile to dial in some decent sounds, but it does a good job as you've demonstrated here.

Clarification: only the leads were done with the PODxt Live. For the curious, here's the scoop on the rhythm parts:

Epi Les Paul (bridge P/U) into my B52 AT212 combo (poor man's Mesa or, so they say). Two mics: My group buy ACM3 ribbon, and my eBay special beat up MD421 (another thread--literally--look it up :D). Both mics into ART MPA gold pre. The two mics are mixed just about even to end up with one track. Then I tracked it again--one for each side! :D

I'm always late to the party....

Very cool tune you've got started here, Strat. Can't wait to hear what True has in store for you.... or maybe that's something for the cave....

peace

.... not the cave: the SHED....

Sorry, carry on with what you were doing. I didn't mean to interupt!
:o

Thanks Chili. In my world, this would be finished--not just started. But you're right. Seems True has ideas which render still incomplete as of now. :D

I appreciate the listen and comment!

I don't normally venture to this part of the board, mostly due to feelings of gross inadequacy...because of songs like this.

Awesome awesome work, man. I hope someday (I'm still really really new and really really gear-less) to be able to record something close to this.

Can't wait to hear some singin' over top of it!

Only because Tony asked...(you know me--I hate to take pics of my gear and post 'em. :D) Here's the very basic epi LP I modded (my son says it's called "murdered out" when you make something all black--from the auto culture, I guess.) The thing about black is that if it's shiny (and mine is) it reflects like crazy, and kinda doesn't look black. Anyway here it is. All black replacement hardware: tuners, pickups, tailpiece, bridge, knobs, switch, screws, straplocks, even the neckplate--thus the back shot! I even refinished the rosewood neck so that's it's almost pitch black instead of the normal dark brown. (The first pic is a stock photo of how the guitar looked originally.)

Edit: I forgot to mention--I'm nuts about the neck. (no pun intended, really). I sight 'em, and straighten 'em, shim 'em (if needed) and work the frets until the strings are just drop dead close. That's one of the main reasons why I'm comfortable buying cheap guitars. As long as the neck has the potential, I know I can make it sing.

Dude--thanks for the kind words, really. But if I thought this was more intimidating than encouraging I wouldn't post again!

If this sounds impressive to you (and I'm genuinely flattered that you think so) don't be scared off. Don't think, "I can never do that!" Instead, think, "If this schmoe can do this in his basement, so can I."

It sounds trite--but it's that simple. Don't be discouraged--be encouraged.

Yeah, that's what makes this forum so cool. A wide range of talent and skill. And everyone is willing to help everyone else with comments and encouragement. It's almost addictive.

Plus, we get to listen to some really great music for free!!!!

Just to clarify--I meant that we had discussed the possibility of you singing on something for me--but I'm afraid this one's already spoken for (Sorry!). True's getting inspired with some real sweet vocal ideas...

But don't worry--there's more of that 80's anthem madness in me! We'll connect on one! :D

Ok, no problem. Looking forward to it ;)
Cheers
PS: still think the song's great!

You've never seen my basement, have you?! :D

You've never seen my basement, have you?! :D

No...but you haven't seen mine! (Well just in the background of various pics...) But do you have a basement? I didn't have one until I was 27. Then it was a 104 year old victorian with a 6 1/2 foot ceiling--not counting plumbing and wiring. And wet as a swamp. Had it for 10 years...

(Of course, during that 10 years, all my gear was in the studio in the attic! :D)

Odd that you mention that. My house is a 114 year old foursquare with a 7 foot basement (also not counting plumbing and wiring). Not too wet, but certainly too wet to trust any amount of equipment to.

The attic will probably be the route I go, but treating it is gonna be an absolute nightmare I think. The ceilings aren't much higher than the basement, creaky floors, badly sealed windows, etc. etc. etc.

Anyways...sorry to highjack here. Keep up the good work and thanks for the encouragement.

No problem on the hijack...sounds like my old house. It was actually half victorian/half craftsman, and there were foursquares in the neighborhood. When I lived there, I had no idea what I was doing recording wise. My pod, one guitar, a laptop and a radio shack mic. So I had no idea how bad the attic was--I never tried to treat.

Not a straight wall in the attic and yep, creaky wood floors everywhere. Barely enough electricity to work my measely stuff.

So you're one up on me with some knowledge of your situation!

Thanks for the before & after photos, basic black looks very good on that Les Paul Special. I'm a big fan of cheap guitars as well, since you can mod them to your needs and don't feel guilty about it. You can check out some of the cheap electrics in my Guitar harem 2008 photo on my profile page.
I started out with a bolt on Ibanez Les Paul that I learned a lot of stuff on in the 70's. Great guitar-quite a bit like your Special.
