MIDI filtering?

Gotta a problem. Small issue, but I don't know if what I need is doable.

I have 2 keyboards talking to each other via MIDI. One a Kurzweil K2500 and the other a Novation Supernova II.

I have the Novation acting like a master in this instance so that I can play organ sounds inside my Kurzweil, while also playing the Kurzweil with other sounds.

No problem. This all works fine.

The Problem: When I happen to turn the volume control on the Novation, it sends Controller #97 information into my Kuzweil. Controller 97 happens to be the "Decrement Data". So, turning the volume, also makes my Setups/Programs change on my Kurzweil.

I checked this using the Kurzweil Utility feature to see what MIDI info. is being transmitted.

Can this controller be stopped in its tracks? Can it be filtered somehow?

I don't know how to begin to address this, other than knowing I want that particular Controller information to not get into my Kurzweil. Of course, I still need the Novation's keyboard info. (MIDI channel, note on / note off, etc.) to get through.

Check the manuals to see if those functions (sending knob data or responding to incoming CC's) can be turned off or try sending midi note data on a different channel to see if knob movements are sent on a global channel (this would prevent the K2500 from responding to them)

Failing that, you can use a USB midi interface and Midiox to filter the msgs out or if a comp is not practical, Midi Solutions makes an event processor which has the same type of filtering functionality but in a hardware device

Thanks for reply

I just spent 3 hours going over the owner's manuals of both keyboards. I thought I read something that would work, and when I just tried it, it did not. I'm going to try again in a few minutes, to see if I missed something. I also sent the above issue to Kurzweil to see if they could offer suggestion.

I saw the hardware device you mentioned. I may end up having to do that.

Thanks for the thought

I have a couple of such midi processors that would do the job for you.

Yamaha MEP 4 will do the job and more. I'll sell it to you for $75 plus shipping.

That's less than 1/2 of the ME device :)

Kind of you to offer. I went and looked at that piece of gear, and also viewed the owner's manual from the Yamaha site. Looks extremely complicated. The manual read that you have to program it in Hexadecimal, which may only be a a simple conversion chart, but still not intuitive.

If you don't sell it in the next few months, maybe I'll come back and give you a holler.

For now, I'm just unplugging one of my MIDI cords so as to not affect my Kurzweil programs from the Novation. When I need to use the Novation's keyboard to control the Kurzweil, I'll take pains to set the swithes correctly before plugging that cord back in.

Things may get more complicated as my song list grows, in which case I may need to come back to the equipment purchase idea.

Thanks for now.

No worries - it's been sitting in my rack unused. I'm ion no hurry to sell it.
