yeah, I'll do that. I have them at home.

The more I listen to it, the less happy I am about the newer tracks. I'll post the raw tracks and hopefully someone with better eq skills can show me what I'm doing wrong.

Man, nothing I've heard sounds bad at all. It would be cool to hear the totally raw tracks.

I agree that the sound in the track would blend into a mix well, but also that the guitar wouldn't be in front.

I usually use small diaphragm condensers up close (like the 14th fret) in an x-y stereo pattern. If I want more bass, I move closer to the soundhole (17th fret?) and further away for less. Often, I use a third mic that is omni further away, in order to pick up some room, if it's good. Mic placement is a gigantic factor with acoustics.

Technically, the 990 is a small diaphragm condenser, but I've had a hard time getting a good sound from it for acoustics, too. The 991/603 which uses the same diaphragm in a pencil mic body is better for some reason. What Astatics are those?

If you get a chance, get your friend to play both the Martin and your acoustic while you stand back an listen, so that you can get familiar with the difference in sound - this will help you later on

and here is the raw track. Each mic panned 100% to each side. The playing is a bit sloppy. I had to finish before my wife got home.

oh, and the astatic is a CTM-1000. I'm pretty sure they don't make them anymore.

That one sounds the best to me, but it doesn't sound raw. Did you take the comp and eq off as well?

yeah, I bypassed everything.

Odd. Anyway, I can hear a bit of ringing. Maybe that is coming from the room? Also, I don't think that is boomy in the least. In fact, I'd say the opposite, you are suffering from a lack of low mids. The sound you have would work well in a rock mix, but for solo acoustic I like more meat - which if I understand correctly is what you are looking for.

Does the guitar sound full when you listen in the room live?

The ringing could very well be from the room. It's not treated, other than the curtains and the coat rack. And I'm not sure that my guitar sounds much better live. Then again, I've never heard anybody but me play it, so I'm not sure.

Hey guys, thanks for the help. It took this thread to make me face the fact that I tend to over eq. I shall hold this lesson dear to me for years to come.

Hard lesson to learn. I was the same way until recently. I thought everything needed some sort of eq, compression, something. Turns out the only thing I needed was a button on me that made me use my ears instead of the meters.

Oh, and I listened to each and every take, and I think you were a lot closer than you thought to a decent tone that would have set well in almost any mix.
