Lizard People
An instrumental.

The drums and rhythm guitar were recorded simultaneously with a single omnidirectional microphone.

Then we gussied it up with some other instruments. Did we fuck it up? :)

It's definitely a strange sound - but I think I like it for a song or two. What do you think? Should we put it on the record?

How can I not respond to a come on that includes both "gussied up" and "fuck it up?"

No, you didn't fuck it up. The drums sound a bit distant (and a little dominatied by the brass), but on the other hand the room sound is not a bad one.

I love the "gussied up" parts. The instruments are layered quite nicely and everything's there to be heard. Everything's got it's place in the mix and nothing seems to be competing.

I'm at about 3:30 now--very sweet lead guitar line. And I love the guitar over the keys--great choice.

All in all, great job. Again, given the "room sound" on the drums, it creates an instrumental jam sound very reminiscent of seventies prog bands.

This tune conjures up images of sitting in a smoke filled jam room late at night and letting the music flow. And (based on the title of the song), there may be more than just cigarette smoke in the air  No red-eyed smilies available, so we'll cover them with sunglasses.

I like what you've done mix wise. The cymbals are hot in the mix, but not in a distracting way...that's how they'd sound in our 12 by 16 smoke filled jam room. By the way...you got that kit sound using only microphone?

I could go for a bit more bass guitar and a bit more lead guitar. The tones are fine, maybe just bump them up some.

As far as putting it on the album is going to depend on a number of things, namely if can you work it in where it doesn't sound out of place alongside the other tunes...being an instrumental, you don't want it to be perceived as "filler." From your other songs I've heard (which are excellent by the way), this isn't too crazy out of sync with anything. I think with careful track number placement it could really be a stong addition.

The cymbals do give it the LIVE feel.
A bit of a bass bump'd be nice.
Some very tastey sounds in the gussied up zone.
Nice tight performance in the base recording.
Cosmic - sort of the spacey edges of Supertramp - rather like School from COTCentury or Wedding Cake Island from Midnight Oil.
I like it!

Pretty good drum sound for one mic. The cymbals are bit much for me, and the bass is kind of booming. Nice guitar tones and stuff. I'm not typically a fan of jam songs, but this one wasn't too bad to me. Maybe kind of repetitive, but that's what jams are.

Put it on your album as an untitled bonus track that starts like 9 minutes after the last song ends. I love it when I get a CD with stuff like that on it. :)

No.

Me too.

What do you think?
I like the live quality to the sound. The sound quality is excellent. The fact that the initial drum/rhythm gtr take was recorded with a single mic makes it all the more interesting, production-wise. What mic?

Hot lead gtr playing in the second half. Drumset and bass are the most insteresting parts overall though IMO.

Should we put it on the record?
Yes. But you already knew that.;)

Nice piece man....this has a nice atmosphere to it. Yeah, it did take me back to those good ol' days in the rehearsal room...musicians just hanging about!
And you're damn good musicians too.....

Cheers
Joe :D

This sounds awsome, kinda brings me back to Yes`s realyer soundwise.

the recording is damn nice and clean, and I love the sound.

That guitar is Gilmour all the way, he`d give you guys a pat on the back for that one.
Damn fine playing:)

Yes its becomming more floydish in the latter part of the tune, wich I can only say to me as a listener is great.

Its hard making Instrumentals intresting, you guys nail that task easily:cool:

glad to hear that studio of yours is working out for ya`ll:)

what more can I say, still a fan:)

Yeah, the cymbals are loud, but they're a nice bright, not a harsh bright, so that didn't detract for me.

Pretty nice. Hell yeah...put it on the record.

The kick/snare combo is a little meatier than the other stuff I've heard which I personally like on this at least.

You showed remarkable restraint on this as, in terms of musicianship, I know you could bust this out at any moment into some insane over-the-top jam, but instead it is quite subtle and builds gradually.

I love the use of feedback and the phaser-like sounds. Dave Gilmour sits in towards the end...score!:)

I want to listen like a motherfucker. But the site detects my WMP, but then I just get a blank page. When I try to download it, it tries to load forever, but never does. I'll try again later.

Dude, I am so impressed with the jam you recorded with Slidey.

It's easily some of the best amateur stuff I've ever heard, hands down.

I am not worthy.

I'm in the same boat... nice pun, huh? I'm on a ship...

I can't download or stream anything because the server on the ship blocks it all out.

I have always dug your stuff. I guess I can wait until I get to shore. Someone keep this one bumped up in the forum.

I love the way certain options still say, "COMING SOON!!!"

It's been ten years and counting. :D

No comment on the recording C -- it's good live stuff -- demo level -- and as such the recording levels are kind of all over the place ... w/ no way to really "fix" them.

This is the type of "insider" material fans eat up ... a la ... bootleg Beatles tapes.

Therefore, I wouldn't release it on the CD.

I'd create a fan site where folks can ONLY access this type of extra stuff if they sign up on the site as your fans --

... and promise to pay you lots of money in perpetuity ...

wait ... scrap that last part -- I got a little carried away w/ the vibe ...

:D

Thanks, K - that's a good idea. Steve and I will discuss tonight..

I thought the guitar and drums sounded decent for being recorded with a single omni. But it doesn't and won't have a "modern" sound if you do it that way. If you're comfortable with that, then fine. If not, then you'd need change something.

I liked the bass tone a lot. I'm on small headphones so I can't be sure, but it sounds a little boomy. That bass has a strong resonance somewhere between 80 and 120 hz it sounds like. And every time the bassist hits that note.... BOOOM..

The lead guitar work was very good.

Sounds good. My only nit is that the beginning is a bit static and takes a while to get the momentum up. Very good playing, would be excellent to see this performed live.
