RMS is an abbreviation of root mean square. When used in metering it's used to measure the average level of the audio which more closley represents how we hear "loudness" as compared to a peak metering system. Average level isn't a complete indicator of level though. Orban has a new (and free) meter that can be used which takes it a few steps further.
